In a dispute over government funding, attorneys in England and Wales who are involved in criminal trials have decided to go on an indefinite strike beginning in September.

According to the Criminal Bar Association (CBA), nearly 80% of voting members supported intensifying the recent sporadic strike action, which included refusing to take on new cases or cover cases for colleagues who have gone overdue.

They will strike indefinitely beginning on September 5, the day Boris Johnson's replacement as prime minister is scheduled to be announced.

Real earnings, according to attorneys who represent clients in criminal court cases, have fallen by 28% since 2006.

According to the attorneys, many junior barristers make only a median salary of $20,900 in their first three years, forcing many to give up their careers.

The CBA stated that the proposal would not be implemented until the end of 2023 at the earliest. The government had offered barristers a 15% pay increase.

British courts already have a backlog of about 58,000 cases, which has been made worse in part by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, according to CBA, the justice system has long been dysfunctional due to a lack of attorneys.

The strike is the most recent in a string of labour disputes in Britain, where rail, port, and airline workers have walked out in protest at pay increases that have not kept pace with inflation, which is expected to reach 13% later this year.

On Sunday, workers at the largest container port in Britain began an eight-day strike that, according to their union and shipping firms, could have a significant negative impact on supply chains and trade.

East Coast of England's Felixstowe employees are engaging in industrial action over a pay dispute.

British criminal trial lawyers vote to go on indefinite strike in September

All India Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Trade Unions Co-ordination Committee (AIHALTUCC) on Monday started its indefinite strike for 'fair and early settlement of wage revision of the employees'.

Speaking to ANI, General Secretary of Hindustan Aeronautics Employees Association (HAEA) Suryadevara Chandrashekhar said: "The HAL executives have taken a gross hike of 35 per cent and 110 per cent to 140 per cent in perks and we are just demanding parity." He said that so far 11 rounds of negotiations had been held with the management and wage committees but nothing fruitful was achieved as the management was claiming that the company's financial condition was not good.

Chandrashekhar said that the AIHALTUCC had "no other option as they are forced to go on agitation path, for achieving fair and early wage revision of the employees."

On October 1, in a letter to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Chandrashekhar had said that the firm "did not respect the advice of the Defence Ministry and the Conciliation authorities to negotiate and resolve the issue in an amicable way."

Responding to the letter, the HAL had said that the proposed indefinite strike by firm's trade union was illegal and workers would&nbsp;lose various company benefits if they go ahead with it.

The statement further read that the AIHALTUCC has decided to resort to an indefinite strike to fulfil their "untenable demands" and the unreasonable nature of their demands had been brought out in a number of meetings.

HAL added that the management was open for discussions and conclusion of wage revision effective from January 1 could be achieved only with the co-operation of the unions based on realistic and affordable demands.

Social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday called off his fast in Ralegan Siddhi, Ahmednagar. Hazare's move came after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that a new Lokpal bill will be prepared and introduced in the next session.

Anna Hazare calls off indefinite hunger strike after Maharashtra CM accepts demand

The indefinite strike by employees of the city's civic transport undertaking Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will continue Friday, as talks between union leaders and officials remained inconclusive.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, whose party controls the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), met the BEST union leaders in the presence of Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the BEST commissioner Surendra Kumar Bagde at the Mayor's bungalow Thursday.

The negotiations went on for nearly seven hours but failed to break the deadlock.

"The officials have refused to relent on our demands to merge the budget of BEST with that of the BMC. Therefore, the strike will continue. They did not agree to even give us a written assurance about our other demands," BEST Workers Union president Shashank Rao told reporters after the meeting.

He added that while Thackeray tried to find a middle ground, he did not succeed.

The Union has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded a written assurance on its demands, Rao said.

"This strike was called by workers. In the absence of definite assurance, what will we tell them?" said Rao.

Nearly 32,000 BEST employees are on indefinite strike since Tuesday over various demands, including higher salaries and merger of budgets. While the BMC is the richest municipal body in the country, BEST is a loss-making undertaking.

Not a single BEST bus plied on Mumbai roads since morning, an official said.

Commuters complained that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers were charging much more than normal rates.

A PIL was filed in the Bombay High Court Thursday seeking a direction to BEST workers to end the strike. The court will be hearing it Friday.

The BEST has a fleet of over 3,200 buses, which criss-cross the metropolis and also operate services in the neighbouring Thane district and Navi Mumbai. It is the second-biggest mode of transport in Mumbai after the local trains.&nbsp;

Mumbai: BEST indefinite strike to continues

The strike called by the resident doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), after one of their colleagues was assaulted by a senior doctor partially affected healthcare services at the premier institute on Friday.

Emergency and ICU services remained operational, but all routine surgeries have been cancelled, out-patient clinics being run in a restricted manner and all academic activity and exams postponed indefinitely, a senior officer of the administration said.

The hospital administration has put in place a contingency plan for patient care services, as a part of which faculty-on-call in all clinical departments will physically man the in-patient wards.

"OPD services will function on restricted basis till such a time that normalcy is restored. Only follow-up patients with prior appointment will be registered in OPD. New Patients OPD registration will be done as per availability of faculty in respective OPD as decided by Head of Department/Unit concerned. No walk-in registration (new and old) will be done," the order by the administration said.

Routine surgeries will remain suspended and only emergency cases will be taken up for surgery. Diagnostic services will function on a restricted basis as maximum possible for the faculty, it stated.

"Head(s) of all clinical departments will make arrangements for the round-the-clock availability of doctors of speciality concerned either from research staff or by the faculty members. Under no circumstances any inpatient ward will function without the physical availability of doctors of speciality concerned," the order read.

In a statement late last night, the AIIMS said the incident in question took place on Wednesday, following which the senior doctor apologised to his junior.

Announcing the indefinite strike yesterday, the doctors have demanded immediate suspension of the senior doctor, who also heads a department at the premier institute. The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) has also urged that the doctor in question should not be allowed to take in thesis candidates and conduct any kind of verbal or written examination.

As a mark of protest, the doctors yesterday worked wearing helmets. They also sought a written apology from the senior doctor concerned.

In a letter to AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, the RDA alleged that the senior doctor slapped a senior resident in front of attendees, nursing staff and colleagues, and that the resident doctor was under depression and had gone home.

The RDA said an atmosphere of fear existed in the department headed by the senior doctor, and that nobody protested as the chief threatened to fail the junior doctors.&nbsp
