House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 8 Review: It’s been eight weeks already since the House of the Dragon dropped its first episode for season 2 and we can’t believe how fast the weeks went past us. Season 2 wrapped up today with a finale that has left a varied impression on the internet – while some found it lacklustre and not finale-worthy, others found makers rushing to close the second chapter without giving us anything to feed on for the next two years (it will take at least that much time for season 3 to premiere). With no major character deaths, no crazy character arcs that we didn’t already foresee, no great insights into what to expect and no dragon fight, House of the Dragon season 2 finale was a great episode but not worthy of closing the season. It leaves you with a feeling of an impending war, something that we sensed last season too. What we loved about House of the Dragon season 2 finale: We have better clarity on who is fighting for which side. Like, the Lannisters are able to strike a deal with pirates for Greens to fight with the Sea Snake and Team Black’s naval army to fight the blockade or the Lords of Rivverrun now swearing for Queen Rhaenyra. We also have major clarity on Daemon who started off with wanting to be called the King and claiming the Iron Throne for himself to now bending the knee finally to Rhaenyra. It took a whole season for Daemon to decide his loyalty but he knows his ‘purpose’. His hallucinations and daydreaming also saw an end with the finale as he sees the future – the White Walkers, The Night King, Daenerys rising from the ashes with three baby dragons, a Civil War with all dragons meeting their death and Rhaenyra sitting on the Iron Throne. The season 2 finale also gave us a Rhaenyra and Alicent reunion. They looked like a couple who loved, fought and lost it all. When Alicent goes to meet Rhaenyra to ask for the bloodshed to be stopped and for prevailing peace, she gets a befitting answer. But what’s heartwarming is not what is said between them but what is left to be deciphered. The lost gaze, the lost kiss, the lost hug and the lost last words of goodbye – pretty much sums up the relationship between the two women who were once best friends and each other’s confidantes. Read the last episode's review here The new Dragonriders are cocky especially Ulf who is ill-mannered and ill-behaved at the court. It just proves why Rhaenyra’s decision to get more dragons to join the fight with lowborn men at the helm – could prove to be rushed in the future. Whether it befits her good results, is a thing to wonder and we will only get to know in season 3. All we know is that it makes Prince Jaecarys troubled and rightly so! What we hoped the House of the Dragon season 2 finale addressed: The new episode doesn’t feel like a finale because it lacks the urgency that the finale demands. None of the new dragon riders get a hand at flying their dragons. They are not shown flexing their muscles. Before racing towards the Dance of the Dragons in the next season, we would have loved to see a precursor to that show, something to keep our minds at for the next two years. We get to see a glimpse of Ser Otto Hightower, who has been missing from action since he was dismissed from Aegon II’s court. It would have been nice to know where he was at all this while and what plans he’s been hatching. The bit between Ser Criston Cole who is out marching the King’s army in the Riverlands and Alicent’s younger brother Ser Gwayne Hightower was misplaced and boring. Makers could have done without giving him screen time where he thinks about his sins and grieves the loss of peace and love in his life. What could have been better in House of the Dragon season 2 finale: The episode builds on Aemond Targaryen’s frustration at not being the mightiest in Westeros, and on being snatched that title now that Rhaenyra has more dragons. Not only does he burn an entire town because of his rage but is also seen pushing sister Halaena to ride into battle with her formidable dragon Dreamfyre. In the sequence in which he approaches Halaena and tries convincing her to ride to battle, we would have loved to see the show explore their relationship. The books mention that the two were intimate and that all of Halaena’s kids were with Aemond and not Aegon II. Maybe that could have been teased? But we loved it when Halaena shares her vision of the future with Aemond and tells him she knows of his treason, burning Aegon at Rook’s Rest and that she sees him defeated and being swallowed at God’s Eye. The moment she tells him that Aegon II is yet to see victory, we couldn’t help but notice Aemond’s face which looked like he was stabbed by a thousand needles at once. In all, House of the Dragon season 2 wrapped up with an anti-climatic episode, with no major frills and fancy, something you’d expect from the Game of Thrones spinoff. I mean, they had dragons, they had the material, they had a warning of war and violence and they did nothing with it for the finale. House of the Dragon season 2 episode 8 was great as an episode 8 and not a finale. There should have been two more episodes before they wanted us to wait for another season.

While it backfired the last time, in episode 7, Rhaenyra strategises harder and brings together all Targaryen bastards.

She plans this for her two big dragons – Vermithor or the Bronze Fury and Silverwing, both gigantic dragons and unclaimed.&nbsp;

If you were rooting for the Blacks, this episode is highly climatic for Team Rhaenyra because she’s gained more control over her council (with Lord Corlys commanding respect for her as the Lord Hand), has teeth to bare because of the new dragons getting added to her army of dragons against the competition and wide discontentment towards those ruling in the King’s Landing. There is widespread hatred towards Aemond Targaryen (the one-eyed King Regent) who rides Vhagar dragon and no sympathies for Aegon II who is lying crippled in his bed chamber after the unfateful fight with Rhaenys and Aemond.

<h2>King's Landing is no fun in this House of the Dragon episode</h2>

The King’s Landing seems like a bad place to be in this episode with people trying to flee the Red Keep, with starvation skyrocketing and falling support for Aemond and Aegon II’s claim. All councilmen are hovering over one another for attention and trying to themselves a position of power in the absence of anyone strong. We miss Otto dearly, because you can hate his guts but not his diplomatic skills. Also, the second best to Otto his absence, his daughter and Queen Dowager Alicent has been banished from the council so she’s absent from most of the action too.&nbsp;

Things are finally picking up in Harrenhal as Daemon Targaryen seems to be out of nightmares for the episode. He’s been able to show some reserve and get in line with Lord Tully to get Riverlands to fight for Rhaenyra and his cause. It’s taken him a total of seven episodes to do this but we’re glad he’s been able to do it.&nbsp;

<h2>The episode is a visual delight</h2>

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 7 offers some great visuals because we get to see both the unclaimed dragons in their glory. First, we get to see how you actually claim a dragon – the Valyrian song, dragon accepting you as a rider and the final ascension onto his back. It’s glorious.

Ulf the White who claimed in&nbsp;Season 2 that his grandfather was Jaehaerys the Conciliator, has claimed Silverwing, a dragon flown by Jaehaerys’ wife.&nbsp;Hugh Hammer who was helping Aegon in the start of the season by making their dragon-killing weapons is now riding Vermithor. He is the son of Viserys and Daemon's sister who used to work at a pleasure house. Seasmoke, meanwhile is ridden by&nbsp;Addam Hull, bastard of Corlys Velaryon.

To add to it, both Vermithor and Silverwing can be called the two most exquisite dragons – they are true to their names, beautiful and a vision in the open sky. The Greens have a lot to worry about because they now just have one big dragon, Vhagar and who’s quite tired (if we put all fights up to date into perspective).&nbsp;

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Rhaenyra now has three more dragons for the coming war

House of the Dragon has finally served! As we approach halftime in season 2 of the ongoing HBO show, makers reveal that they too have Game of Thrones-style shocking moments to throw you off your seat, which they might have used sparingly in previous episodes, but it’s too soon to dismiss them.&nbsp;*Spoiler alert*

What started off as a rather drab season with action barely picking up, House of Dragon went all guns blazing in new episode which has dragons, dance of the dragons (where two or more dragons attack each other and are engaged in violent chase), death, sinister plots and much more.&nbsp;

Where should we start…episode 4 picks up with Daemon Targaryen seeing things (having visions) and what we can loosely call insanity as he slowly loses his grip over reality at Harrenhal. As Rhaenyra (Team Black) and clan try reaching out to him and find out if he’s gathering strength in her stead, Daemon continues to brood, go a little insane, has visions of a young Rhaenyra reminding him of his faults, greed and jealousy and his longing for the Iron Throne and how he wishes that he was labelled Viserys’ heir instead of her.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ser Criston Cole has advanced and has shown great valour. He’s busy winning lands in the name of Aegon II (Team Green).&nbsp;

This pits Team Green and Team Black at a juncture when each of them know that the war has finally been sounded and neither can retrace their steps. Princess Rhaenyra is back after meeting Queen Dowager Alicent asking for truce and peace and she’s ever more convinced of her “rightful” claim to the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Alicent deals with her own demons in the episode, trying to make sense of Viserys’ last words and whether she truly deciphered the correct meaning of what he said on his deathbed.&nbsp;

<h2>What we love about House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4 *Spoiler alert</h2>

Everything! Yes, this episode is by far the best of season 2 of House of the Dragon and I know I am saying this even before we have reached the climax. It has the apt balance of suspense, chaos, violence, dragons, manipulation, egregious judgements, character developments and everything we had been looking for that had been lacking in the show so far.&nbsp;

There are moments when you have to hold your breath and just lay still for the fear of missing out on something crucial transpiring on the screen.&nbsp;

There is heightened excitement around it, much like every time Drogon had to burst onto our scene whenever Daenerys Targaryen of Game of Thrones needed him. You keep wondering which dragon will come because there are so many of them in House of the Dragon and they are all ready for war.&nbsp;

Then there is death towards the end of the episode that we must get to, which tops everything else. We don’t know whether it’s certain that the central character has been killed but we do see him charred and burnt next to his dragon. Oops, you now know that it’s a male character that has been killed off.&nbsp;

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Watch out for epic dragon battle in the best episode so far

'House of the Dragon' has done the unthinkable: it just made Westeros cool again for those who were disillusioned with the debacle that were the last couple of seasons of 'Game of Thrones'. It is not perfect by any means, and still appears to be finding its feet but it does have in spades what turned 'Game of Thrones' into the best show in the world: clever plotting and characterisation, beautiful cinematography, and cinema-level visual effects. The show, set 127 years before the events of 'GoT', explores Dance of the Dragons, a momentous event in the post-Targaryen era of Westeros that caused much bloodshed and had far-reaching ramifications.

Unlike 'GoT, the series' contenders, unlike the War of the Five Kings, are all within the same house: the Targaryens. Ryan Condal and George RR Martin, the originator of this entire universe, share creator credits. Both, along with the rest in the writer's room, had a mountainous task of crafting a story out of basic plot outlines given in 'Fire &amp; Blood', the tome that serves as the source material for the series. 'Fire &amp; Blood', for those who were not aware, had a framing device in the form of a treatise written by Archmaester Gyldayn. So the scribes had to fill in the little details like character motivations and interpersonal relationships, and they have, I daresay, done a bang-up job.

One thing that worked in their favour, perhaps, was that 'HotD' has a much smaller scale. Most of the important events transpire in King's Landing or Dragonstone, an island castle off the eastern coast of Westeros. The story begins with Paddy Considine's tragic King Viserys Targaryen I, the reigning monarch, who is good at heart but has a quality that is otherwise noble but detrimental in a king: wanting to please everybody. If you have power over millions and enforce that position with the help of armed forces, it is inevitable that you will displease several sections of your realm. He declares as his heir his daughter and then the only surviving child Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock as young Rhaenyra, with Emma D'Arcy as adult version), kicking off a chain of events that would eventually lead to the Dance of the Dragons.

After his wife dies in childbirth, the King eventually marries again to Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey as the younger version, and Olivia Cooke as the adult). She bears him children, and prodded by her conniving father Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King, Alicent, who was fast friends with Rhaenyra when young, grows up to be resentful of the latter's position as the future Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

The stage is set for a war, and this one is going to be especially fiery. Not metaphorically either. For both sides have dragons, and when dragons will fight, the realm will burn. The war does not really start until the finale, but the season features loads of intrigue, conspiracies, betrayals, and backstabbing to satisfy any fan who loves this world for precisely those things.

Thanks to a cast of great actors, the performances are excellent almost throughout. Considine is easily the best of them all, and much has already been said about him, but Ifans and Matt Smith come very close. As the Hightower patriarch, he sports a straight-faced menace that makes it hard to look away. Smith, in the role of Daemon Targaryen, is also equally impressive, doing top-tier acting while using precious few words. Eve Best, as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, known as the Queen Who Never Was, is another top performer.

'House of the Dragon' also benefits greatly from the painstaking world-building done by 'Game of Thrones'. There is a brief mention of an impending war between the living and the dead and an existential threat from the extreme north. Characters frequently speak in Old Valyrian, the language of Valyrian Freehold, a kingdom ruled by dragon lords among whom the Targaryens were only one family among dozens. These are not only fun callbacks, but also make the world of 'HotD' feel more lived in.

Thanks to a cast of great actors, the performances are excellent almost throughout. Considine is easily the best of them all, and much has already been said about him, but Ifans and Matt Smith come very close. As the Hightower patriarch, he sports a straight-faced menace that makes it hard to look away. Smith, in the role of Daemon Targaryen, is also equally impressive, doing top-tier acting while using precious few words. Eve Best, as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, known as the Queen Who Never Was, is another top performer. 'House of the Dragon' also benefits greatly from the painstaking world-building done by 'Game of Thrones'. There is a brief mention of an impending war between the living and the dead and an existential threat from the extreme north. Characters frequently speak in Old Valyrian, the language of Valyrian Freehold, a kingdom ruled by dragon lords among whom the Targaryens were only one family among dozens. These are not only fun callbacks, but also make the world of 'HotD' feel more lived in. 'House of the Dragon' Season 1 is an absolute winner. It streams in India on Disney+ Hotstar.

The series&nbsp;is a prequel and is set about 200 years before the events of the original show. Like the story of Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, and so on, 'HotD' also centres around a struggle for the Iron Throne, the seat of the&nbsp;monarch&nbsp;on the fictional continent of Westeros. But while the tussle for power in 'GoT' was between houses, in the new series it is among the Targaryens themselves. The ensuing conflict is called Dance of the Dragons, and was a civil war between different factions among the Targaryens that saw much of the realm reduced to ruin.

Until now two episodes of the show have been aired and this scribe has seen six thanks to screeners. I do not know about you, but for me personally, 'House of the Dragon', at the time of writing this, is not only a worthy successor but a better show. Yes, it is too early to judge, but that is my impression. I explain.

The show is much easier to get into than its parent series. You can watch it even if you have not seen 'GoT'.

The reigning king Viserys I (Paddy Considine) rules in a time when the dynasty is well-established and the small folk of Westeros treat the Targaryen as something akin to gods with their dragons, their lilac eyes (it is a whole thing in the books), and their silver hair. Viserys has only one child Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock as young Rhaenyra), who is a woman, and the lords of Westeros tend not to prefer bowing before a female monarch if they can help it. So the king is on the lookout of a suitable wife after his previous one died in childbirth (the king chose to save the potential son when given the tragic choice by the Grand Maester, but he died too).

And until then, Rhaenyra is his heir. This irks not only certain lords of the Small Council, but also others with designs on the Iron Throne, either for themselves or their offspring. Among them is Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), the king's younger brother, who is written as a Jaime Lannister stand-in, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the cousin of the king who wished to rule the Seven Kingdoms but was spurned in favour of a male (Viserys).

The stage is set for a conflagration, and not a metaphorical one either. For this time, dragons have not gone extinct. They are very much there and are the reason the Targaryen are so feared. And when dragons fight among themselves, they can lay waste to the entire world. But before the actual battles begin, there is going to be a lot of intrigue, betrayals and backstabbing. While until now, 'House of the Dragon' does not have any character that is on the same level of wiliness and as fascinating as Littlefinger or Varys, it will satiate those fans of 'Game of Thrones' who watched it for all the political machinations and conspiracies. The dialogue is good and the characters are sketched extremely well.

It can be too much even for 'GoT' veterans.

As it stands, 'House of the Dragon' is no match for the best of 'Game of Thrones' as the characters and the plot are not nearly that interesting enough yet, but it also feels fresh despite it all being the same world. The stakes here are also higher than, say, the first couple of seasons of 'GoT'. The subsequent episodes should deliver in the spectacle aspect after the fantasy version of dogfights (dragon-on-dragon combat) ensue.
