As per a new report released, In Danger, prior to the International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada, the smallest annual fall in new HIV infections since 2016 occurred between the years 2020 and 2021, when the number of infections fell by 3.6 per cent globally.

The UNAIDS data showed, new HIV infections are currently increasing where they had previously been declining in Asia and the Pacific.

However, as per a press release, annual HIV infections have increased in Eastern Europe, North Africa, and Latin America. The rapid development seen in eastern and southern Africa in previous years will be significantly slowed in 2021.

Despite better HIV medication and resources to prevent, identify, and cure opportunistic infections, around&nbsp;650,000 people died due to AIDS in 2021.

The report outlines that if things continue as they are, there would be more than 1.2 million new HIV infections annually by 2025, while the UN member states have established a goal of less than 370,000 new infections.

A combination of antiviral drugs usually used to treat HIV has no beneficial effect in patients hospitalised with COVID-19, a peer-reviewed study said on Monday, confirming the initial results of a large-scale randomised trial of the drug.

British scientists running the RECOVERY trial at the University of Oxford in June said interim results had convincingly ruled out any meaningful benefit of lopinavir-ritonavir in lowering mortality among hospitalised patients.

Publishing the full findings of the study in The Lancet medical journal, the scientists said that 23% of those given the drugs died within 28 days of treatment beginning, compared to 22% of those given usual care.

The treatment also did not reduce the length of a patient's hospital stay or the chances they would be put on a ventilator.

"Results from this trial show that it is not an effective treatment for patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19," said Professor Martin Landray from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford, who co-leads the RECOVERY trial.

AbbVie Inc's Kaletra is a combination of the drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, used together to fight HIV. The company had increased its supplies while it was determining whether it can be used to treat COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in July discontinued its trial of lopinavir-ritonavir after it failed to reduce mortality.

The lopinavir-ritonavir arm of the RECOVERY trial involved 1,616 patients receiving the drugs, and 3,424 receiving usual care alone.

The Oxford-based RECOVERY trial has been examining the effectiveness of a range of possible COVID-19 treatments, enrolling 13,000 patients in all.

The arm of the trial studying dexamethasone, a steroid, found it reduced the death rate of patients that required oxygen. Another arm found the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, touted by U.S. President Donald Trump, had no benefit as a treatment.

Another patient in London, UK, is now cured of HIV, doctors have claimed. He has become only the second person in the world to have got rid of the disease.

Adam Castillejo — the now 40-year-old "London Patient" — was first diagnosed with HIV in 2003, according to The New York Times. He had stopped undergoing anti-retroviral therapy more than 30 months ago and revealed his identity on Monday (March 9).

According to the Lancet HIV journal, Castillejo was not cured by HIV drugs; but by a stem-cell treatment, he received for cancer he also had.

Timothy Brown referred to as the "Berlin Patient", was the first person reported to be cured of HIV in 2011 — three and half years after undergoing similar treatment. He received a similar bone-marrow transplant in 2007 and has been HIV-free for more than a decade now.

"We propose that these results represent the second ever case of a patient to be cured of HIV," lead researcher Prof Ravindra Kumar Gupta, from the University of Cambridge, said in a statement, adding, "the new test results were even more remarkable and likely demonstrated the patient was cured."

In both cases, stem cells used for their transplants came from a donor who had a relatively rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection. The aggressive therapy was primarily used to treat the patients' cancers, not their HIV.

The cure, however, is not permanent as tests suggest Castillejo still has remnants of the virus in his body, as does Brown -- adding 99 per cent of their immune cells have been replaced by donor ones.

Researchers have also cautioned that the breakthrough did not constitute a generalised cure for HIV. Castillejo's treatment was a "last resort" as he also suffered blood cancer which would likely have killed him without intervention.
