The post for party president became vacant after A H Vishwanath had resigned taking moral responsibility for the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp; 
 
"Madhu Bangarappa will be the working president of JDS. We have decided to have only one working president, there is no question of multiple working presidents," said JD(S) chief HD Deve Gowda.

The state committee also elected Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy to lead its youth wing in the state.&nbsp;

"Last week I said questions might arise that your family dynasty continues, but this came as a shock for me. I was really surprised when HD Deve Gowda Ji took this call. I am looking forward to work for the party," said Nikhil Kumaraswamy while speaking to media.

Last month, Gowda had hinted on a possible rift between the Congress-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka.

Deve Gowda said, "The leaders of the party (Congress) are worried that they will perish if they continue to go forward with us. They are observing extreme caution in maintaining the coalition government. To ensure this they have even taken a cabinet berth that was allotted to the JD(S). We are just enduring everything and moving forward."

The dissidence within the coalition has been making news since Kumaraswamy took oath a year ago, the severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections have further embarrassed the two partners. Of the 28 seats, Congress and JD(S) managed to win just one seat each and BJP won the lion's share of 25 seats.&nbsp;

Ram Vilas Paswan: Master political craftsman who has worked under six prime ministers

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Thursday rejected claims of BJP leaders that a "grand alliance government" will create chaos, and said the multi-party dispensation led by him had proved it can work.

Speaking in Lok Sabha during a debate on motion of thanks to President's address, the 85-year-old JD(S) leader, who was visibly emotional, said he spent 57 years in public life in state and national politics and this was his last speech.

Recalling his days as the prime minister, Gowda, who led a coalition government for 10 months between 1996-97, said he was not keen to occupy the chair since the issues involved in running a multi-party dispensation.

He said his name came only after then prime minister V P Singh and CPI(M) leader and then West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu declined to accept the position.

Listing out measures undertaken by his government in several areas, Gowda said after the World Bank declined to extend monetary assistance, he had decided to use the black money in the country to fund government programmes.

Gowda said he had proposed a Voluntary Disclosure Scheme which was rejected by then finance minister P Chidambaram.

"Don't unnecessarily talk against grand alliance. Vajpayee started with the coalition. Coalition governments can work if there is an understanding. No one should air their differences outside," he said.

Gowda added he initiated work and sanctioned money for the Bogibeel Bridge, India's longest railroad bridge, connecting the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra, falling in the eastern part of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He also sanctioned Rs 6,100 crore for the northeast region during his tenure, Gowda said.&nbsp;

Deve Gowda not to contest next Lok Sabha polls, grandson Prajwal Revanna may contest

There are no &quot;plans&quot; of a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting at Davos next week, the external affairs ministry said today.

The annual meet of the WEF would be beginning on January 22. Modi would address the opening plenary on January 23.

When asked whether Modi would be meeting US President Donald Trump, he said the two will not be there on the same day.

This would be Modi&#39;s first Davos visit and also the first by an Indian prime minister since the one by H D Deve Gowda in 1997. In case of Trump, he would be the first US President to attend since Bill Clinton in 2000.
