Most market participants are hoping the Biden regime would spell good news for Indian companies, especially IT, and domestic financial markets.

Coming back to domestic factors, investors will also focus on industrial production and inflation data, scheduled to be announced on Thursday.

The NSE Nifty too tumbled 91.25 points, or 0.84 per cent, to close at 10,831.50 after moving between 10,811.95 and 10,944.75.

The domestic equity market took a breather on Tuesday after a five-day rising spree as investors booked profits in metal, financials and auto counters, amid weak cues from international markets after IMF lowered its global growth projections for 2019 and 2020.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 134.32 points to end at 36,444.64, while the broader NSE Nifty finished 39.10 points lower at 10,922.75.

Participants were seen taking money off the table after the recent rally, even as the wider sentiment remained positive, underpinned by better-than-expected Q3 earnings by several bluechips.

The BSE Sensex, after resuming higher at 36,649.92, advanced to 36,650.47 on buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) as well as retail participants.

However, the market quickly slipped into the negative zone as investors chose to lock in gains in recent outperformers, dragging down the key benchmark to a low of 36,282.93 before ending at 36,444.64 down 134.32 points, or 0.37 per cent.

The gauge had rallied over 725 points in the previous five sessions.

Likewise, the 50-stock NSE barometer Nifty finished 39.10 points, or 0.36 per cent, down at 10,922.75 after hitting the day's high of 10,949.80 and a low of 10,864.15.

Brokers said investors turned cautious and preferred to log profits in recent gainers, dragging down key indices.

"The market tracked other Asian markets following IMF's weak forecasts of global growth prospects," said Paras Bothra, President, Equity Research, Ashika Group.

"While India's economic forecasts were retained, concerns were raised over the difficulties in containing the fiscal deficit. Continued weakness in the rupee favoured IT and Pharma stocks while the majority of other sectors were under pressure," he added.

The IMF lowered its global growth projections for 2019 and 2020 to 3.5 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively, citing a slowdown in several advanced economies around the world more rapidly than previously anticipated.

Meanwhile, India is projected to grow at 7.5 per cent in 2019 and 7.7 per cent in 2020, an impressive over one percentage point ahead of China's estimated growth of 6.2 per cent in these two years, the IMF said Monday, attributing the pick up to the lower oil prices and a slower pace of monetary tightening.

The International Monetary Fund in its January World Economy Outlook update on Monday said India would remain the fastest growing major economies of the world.

The fall was led by banking stocks, with IndusInd Bank, Kotak Bank, Federal Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and SBI declining up to 2.36 per cent.

Other losers included ONGC, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, ITC and HCL Tech, falling up to 1.31 per cent.

Shares of TCS ended 0.25 per cent lower at Rs 1,883 apiece ahead of its quarterly earnings.

On the other hand, Tata Motors, NTPC, Infosys, Yes Bank, M&amp;M, L&amp;T, Bharti Airtel, and HUL were the top gainers, rising up to 1.34 per cent.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net of Rs 276.14 crore Wednesday and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 439.67 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

Benchmark indices nursed losses for the second straight day Wednesday as the RBI left the repo rate unchanged, while global markets wobbled on renewed concerns over the US-China trade dispute.

The BSE Sensex tumbled 249.90 points, or 0.69 per cent, to close at 35,884.41. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty fell 84.55 points, or 0.74 per cent, to end at 10,784.95.

All sectoral indices on the BSE finished with losses, led by metal, pharma and rate-sensitive auto and banking stocks.

The Reserve Bank of India Wednesday left the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent while maintaining the stance of 'calibrated tightening' of policy.

In a bid to boost lending, the RBI lowered the reserves lenders are compulsorily required to hold in the form of government securities.

However, it failed to enthuse the markets, which had opened weak and dropped further after RBI's policy announcement.

Weakness in the rupee against the US dollar also weighed on sentiment, traders said. The local unit fell 11 paise to 70.60 against the US dollar intra-day.

"Nifty performed in line with the weak international cues and shut the shop with losses... Nifty Midcap and Small-cap indices fell even sharply by 1.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively.

"Key US indices tumbled more than 3 per cent on Tuesday on the combined onslaught of inversion in bond yields and fresh jitters on trade," said VK Sharma, Head PCG and Capital Markets Group, HDFC Securities.

Sun Pharma, under the regulatory lens for alleged corporate governance lapses, was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, declining 6.59 per cent. 
Other laggards included Tata Steel, Vedanta, Tata Motors, M&amp;M, Coal India and ITC, falling up to 4.27 per cent.

Top gainers included HUL, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Wipro, Reliance Industries and Adani Ports, spurting up to 2.07 per cent.

Global investor sentiment turned weak following uncertainty over negotiations between the US and China on their trade dispute.

US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping had agreed to a truce at the G20 meet.

Trump, however, muddied the waters by suggesting the possibility of an extension of trade talks.

"The negotiations with China have already started. Unless extended, they will end 90 days" from Saturday, Trump tweeted.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 55.89 crore Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 521.38 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

The market was volatile in a narrow range due to weak global cues and selling pressure in pharma, FMCG and auto, analysts said.

"Rupee weakened on account of crunch in domestic liquidity while the gradual decline in yield may ease the concern. Investors' bit conservative in the holiday-shortened week due to uncertainty regarding US-China trade deal and Fed policy," they added.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth a net of Rs 196.90 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares to the tune of Rs 852.99 crore.

The equity benchmark Sensex rallied for the fourth straight session Wednesday, and jumped 267 points, on encouraging second-quarter earnings by tech major Infosys and positive global cues.

The 30- share Sensex soared 267.26 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 35,429.74. It had rallied 1,161 points in the previous three sessions.

The broader NSE Nifty was quoting well above the key 10,600-mark. Nifty was up 81.70 points, or 0.77 per cent, to trade at 10,666.45

Traders said the bullish movement was in line with upbeat Asian shares, following overnight gains at the Wall Street coupled with encouraging earnings by Infosys.

Reliance Industries is scheduled to announce its second-quarter earnings later in the day.

Reflecting the bullish mood, all the sectoral indices, led by tech, bank&nbsp;and realty were trading in positive zone with gains up to 1.47 per cent.

Infosys emerged the top gainer in the Sensex pack, by surging 2.68 per cent after the company Tuesday posted a 10.3 per cent jump in its September quarter consolidated net profit at Rs 4,110 crore, helped by strong deal pipeline and traction in digital revenues.

Other big gainers were ICICI Bank, SBI, Yes Bank, Adani Ports, HUL, Vedanta Ltd, IndusInd Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC Bank, Asian Paint, Axis Bank, Coal India, TCS, Bajaj Auto, PowerGrid, Kotak Bank, Bharti Airtel, RIL, Tata Motors, HDFC Ltd, ITC Ltd and Sun Pharma, rising by up to 1.35 per cent.

Domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 1,059.44 crore, as per provisional data available on the BSE.

Japan's Nikkei rose 1.53 per cent, Korea gained 1.19 per cent, while Shanghai Composite up 0.10 per cent. Taiwan too rose 0.80 per cent. Financial markets in Hong Kong are closed today.

The markets, during the closing on Monday, posted biggest intra-day gain in approximately 1.5 years, with the Sensex closing 610.80 points up at 33,917.94.

Nifty, on the other hand traded up 194.50 points at 10421.40, at the close of day.

Sensex saw the biggest one-day gain in last 17 months, while Nifty recorded its biggest single-day gain in 22 months.

About 1380 shares advanced, 1341 shares declined, and 210 shares were unchanged.

FMCG, IT, Tech, oil &amp; gas, metal, capital goods, banks and auto counters saw heavy buying activity ahead of key IIP and inflation numbers.

Bharti Airtel, ITC, Tata Motors, Infosys, NTPC were among the top gainers, rising up to 3.59 per cent.
