Supreme Court on Friday said that it will hear the bail plea of RJD chief and former Bihar chief minister Laly Prasad Yadav on April 10 in three cases related to fodder scam.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the CBI to file the reply by April 9 and said Yadav's bail plea will be taken up for hearing next Wednesday.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo, sought urgent listing of the bail plea saying notice has been issued in the matter.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the agency needs to file reply in the matter.

"You (CBI) file the reply by April 9. We will take up the matter (Yadav's bail plea) on April 10, the bench said.

Prasad, currently lodged in the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, has challenged the January 10 verdict of the Jharkhand High Court dismissing his bail plea.

The three cases in which Prasad has been convicted are related to the over-Rs 900-crore fodder scam, which pertains to fraudulent withdrawal of money from the treasuries in the Animal Husbandry department in the early 1990s, when Jharkhand was part of Bihar.

The RJD was in power in Bihar with Prasad as the chief minister when the scam had allegedly taken place.&nbsp;

Jharkhand HC judge refers to chief justice CBI plea to enhance Lalu Prasad's prison term

A Special CBI court in Ranchi on Wednesday sentenced 37 people to imprisonment between three to 14 years in a fodder scam case. The court also imposed a fine of up to Rs 1 crore on some of them.

According to a lawyer, four officials have been awarded up to 14 years imprisonment. Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge Shivapal Singh pronounced the sentence on Wednesday, said a lawyer.

The CBI court on April 9 had convicted 37 people in a fodder scam case related to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 34.91 crore from Dumka from 1991-1992 and 1995-1996. This is the 51st fodder scam case in which the CBI court has delivered judgment.

The FIR was lodged against 72 people in 1996.&nbsp;

The charges were framed against 60 accused in 2004. Fourteen accused died during the trial, two admitted their crime and two are absconding.&nbsp;

The court on April 9 had convicted 37 and acquitted five accused.

The fodder scam came to light in 1996 after an FIR was lodged against then Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad.&nbsp;

Lalu Prasad has been convicted in four cases and serving the sentence. He was awarded 14 years of imprisonment on March 23.&nbsp;

The former chief minister is currently undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

The charges were framed against 60 accused in 2004. Fourteen accused died during the trial, two admitted their crime and two are absconding.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said he had not given up the demand for grant of special status to Bihar &quot;for even one second&quot; since he first raised the issue 13 years ago.

He also hit out at the RJD for questioning his &quot;silence&quot; after the TDP pulled out of the NDA seeking similar benefits for Andhra Pradesh.

Kumar declined to comment on the fresh conviction of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in the fourth fodder scam case but said the claims of the former chief minister and his family members of being &quot;framed&quot; in corruption cases &quot;could convince only hardcore supporters&quot;.

&quot;I had written to the then prime minister for a special status to Bihar in 2005, shortly after assuming power in the state. A year later, we got a resolution passed in the state assembly to the effect.

&quot;Since then, the demand has been raised by us relentlessly and I have not strayed for even a second. I&#39;m amused to see those who were never concerned about the issue have suddenly started questioning my silence&quot;, Kumar told reporters at party headquarters here.

He also indicated that the issue of special status for Bihar would be raised before the 15th Finance Commission.

Kumar, who is the JD(U) national chief, had made a surprise appearance at a press conference convened by state chief Bashishth Narain Singh to announce merger of a breakaway faction of Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) founded by former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

Senior JD(U) leader and state minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh was also present on the occasion.

Kumar was responding to queries about the relentless attacks by Lalu Prasad and Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Tejashwi Yadav.

They have been challenging him to speak up on the issue of special status for Bihar in the backdrop of the TDP walking out of the NDA over a similar demand for Andhra Pradesh.
