"Chelsea means a lot to me, I came here with the intention of staying for only one year and it ended up being four years, not just for me but for my family too."

"My sons play for Chelsea so it is a source of great pride to be a part of the Chelsea family literally because my sons are here. I hope they can continue their careers here at this victorious club that many players wish to be a part of. I think everything I did here over the four years, I always gave my all but unfortunately everything has a start, a middle and an end," Silva said in his farewell message on Chelsea's X handle.

Premier League: Chelsea’s Thiago Silva confirms exit after four seasons, likely to return to native Brazil

Luis Suarez scored twice in his farewell match for Gremio as the Brazilian side defeated Fluminense 3-2 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. The 36-year-old Uruguayan football icon, who has been linked with a move to join close friend Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, scored in the 43rd minute and then bagged a second with a cheeky panenka from the penalty spot in the 64th minute.

The victory ensured Gremio finished second in the Brazilian championship, two points behind champions Palmeiras as the season drew to a close on Wednesday. It marked a fitting finale to what has been a dazzling season in Brazilian football for Suarez, who cut short his two-year deal with Gremio after one season saying the calendar was too much for his aging body.

Leading Gremio as captain, Suarez played in 54 of the club's 64 matches in 2023, scoring a total of 29 goals. He ended the year as the second-highest goal scorer in the Brazilian league, with 17, inspiring down-on-its-luck Gremio to an unexpectedly solid season. Suarez has declined to comment on rumors linking him to a move to join former Barcelona team-mate Messi in Miami, saying he wants to focus first and foremost on his family and his health.

"I love this job, but it's hard waking up in pain every morning," he said last weekend. "I'm hard-headed and I want to keep playing, but I don't know what comes next." Those comments came after he scored the lone goal in Gremio's win over Vasco in his final home match, earning an emotional standing ovation from the sold-out crowd.

His stint at Gremio could have been a lame swan song, coming after a return to his boyhood club, Nacional, last year, and tearful exit with Uruguay in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. Instead, Suarez shone in the club's first season back in top-flight play after a painful relegation, helping them to the Rio Grande do Sul state championship and state winners' cup titles -- the latter courtesy of a Suarez hat trick.

Porto Alegre soon caught "Suarezmania:" the striker was named an honorary citizen, and the state government gave him a medal. Attendance at Gremio's stadium meanwhile doubled, and the club registered record sales of jerseys and other paraphernalia.

'Hard to say "basta"'

Fans and local politicians tried to talk Suarez out of his decision to leave after he announced his plans in July. Making his departure more difficult, Gremio's strong showing this season means they have qualified for the Copa Libertadores next year, the South American equivalent of Europe's Champions League.

"I would have loved to play in that competition. But my body is calling the shots," Suarez said. "I need rest, recreation and time to think. It's hard to say 'basta' (enough). Footballers are never ready for retirement."

Luis Suarez's brace in farewell match helps Gremio beat Fluminense in close tie

Veteran Brazilian defender Marcelo hailed the Copa Libertadores title he won with boyhood club Fluminense on Saturday as the biggest of his career, ahead of the Champions League trophies he lifted with Real Madrid.

The Brazilian team claimed its first title in the CONMEBOL South American club competition for the first time in its history after beating Argentina's Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time.

The 35-year-old defender won not only the Champions League five times in his 16 seasons with Real Madrid but also six LaLiga titles, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and two Copa del Rey trophies.

In all, he has been on the winning side in 18 of the 21 club-level finals he has played in.

Marcelo, who started Saturday's final and was substituted at half-time, returned to his boyhood club in February after a spell with Greek side Olympiakos following his departure from the Spanish giants.

"Real Madrid will understand. It's my most important title, at club level, because it's the club that raised me," Marcelo told ESPN.

"I'm winning a very important title with my favourite club, the club that gave me all the tools to have my career, with the employees who saw me grow up. There's nothing more rewarding than that. It's priceless," he added.

Winning the Copa Libertadores as well as the Champions League means Marcelo has joined a group of 15 players including Ronaldinho, Neymar and Julian Alvarez to conquer both intercontinental club tournaments.

"I owed a debt to Fluminense. It was written (that we would win the championship)," he said.

Winning Copa Libertadores bigger than lifting Champions League title with Real Madrid - Marcelo

Brazil's Fluminense beat Argentina's Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time to win the Copa Libertadores for the first time, thanks to John Kennedy's 99th-minute goal at the Maracana on Saturday.

Argentine forward German Cano gave Fluminense the lead with a 36th minute strike but Luis Advincula equalised for Jorge Almiron's side in the second half with a long-range effort.

Kennedy's unstoppable shot gave Fluminense the spoils in extra time, though two minutes later the striker was sent off for excessive celebrations that got him a second yellow card.

Before the end of the first half of extra time a brawl broke out between the players with Boca's Frank Fabra slapping Fluminense captain Nino for which he was sent off.

"I recovered the ball for my son Lorenzo. I can tell him now that I am champion of the Libertadores," said Cano, whose 13th goal this season in the competition was as many as the total scored by all of Boca's players combined.

"I want to dedicate this title to my family, the team, our director and the fans. It was a dream that we wanted to achieve since the first game," he added.

Fluminense's Fernando Diniz, who is also Brazil's interim coach, finally delivered the elusive trophy - the equivalent to Europe's Champions League - for a team who lost the 2008 final.

"We had a lot of chances today but in the end, we failed to capitalise on the opportunity to take advantage of the extra man," said Boca goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

"I think we did a great cup (run), we thank the people and we regret not giving them a joy today."

Boca were aiming for a seventh Libertadores crown but have now lost their last three finals after defeats in 2012 and 2018.
