Bangladesh's flood-hit region struggles as millions uprooted

Heavy rains in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have claimed hundreds of lives. A red alert of heavy rainfall - has been issued by the weather office in most districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including Patna.

"221 relief camps have been established and about 1 lakh people are taking shelter in these relief camps. More than 700 community kitchen are being run," said Deepak Kumar, Chief Secretary, Bihar.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, along with chief secretary Deepak Kumar conducted an aerial survey of the flooded areas. "We have instructed to expedite the relief and rescue operation in the flood-affected areas across the state. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) troops have rescued around 1, 25,000 people from the flood-affected regions till now," Nitish Kumar said on Tuesday.

In Assam, floods have claimed lives of at least 17&nbsp;and affected about 45 lakhs people&nbsp;across 33 districts of the state. The central government on Tuesday released Rs. 251.55 crore as the first instalment of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to the state.

Ninety per cent of the famed Kaziranga National Park is still submerged. Authorities are moving animals to the high land.

The flood situation remains grim in several states across the country, more than a hundred National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) troops have been deployed in various flood-affected areas of the country including Bihar and Assam.

In addition, the 24X7 NDRF control room in Delhi is closely monitoring the situation to coordinate with various agencies for further deployment.
