Sacred Games will be the first Indian show in the Netflix Originals category. The series is a screen adaptation of writer Vikram Chandra’s 2006 thriller.

The series will start filming from next week and will be made into an eight-part series. All eight hour-long episodes of the show will be directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, who are co-founders of Phantom Films. At an announcement today, it was revealed that actors Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte will be a part of the series.

The story follows Sartaj Singh, a Mumbai cop, on the trail of Ganesh Gaitonde, a gang lord. While Saif Ali Khan will play Singh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui will essay the role of Gaitonde and Radhika Apte will play the role of Anjali Mathur, who is roped in by RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) to snare the don.

At the event, Anurag Kashyap, who is looking forward to making his debut in the digital space, expressed his excitement at the production announcement event of the show. He said, "I have always been a responsible filmmaker. But I feel I have often been denied freedom to express my true self in films. Since I have been aware of my freedoms, my films eventually never got censored. But I had to fight long battles to achieve that stage."

Vikramaditya Motwane, who is the co-director and showrunner of Sacred Games, is equally excited about the format of the show. He said, "Across the globe, longer formats such as the six hour or the eight-hour formats are gaining popularity. I also prefer to tell my stories in long formats so it will be interesting to take up this challenge."

He added, “Your competition (with Netflix) is Narcos and Stranger Things. It’s scary but exciting.”

Saif Ali Khan, who plays the role of a police officer in the show said, "I am halfway through Chandra's book. I feel like it has incredible visual details. Also, in spite of being in English, it represents the multi-lingual character of the city, and also this country."

Nawazuddin, who is known for his creative talent on the screen summed up the event as: "Hum kafi time se dab dab ke kaam kar rahe hain . Ab zara khul ke karenge." (We have been suppressing our creative instincts for a long time now. Now, we will use them to their optimum capacity).

The screenplay has been written by Smita Singh, Vasant Nath and lyricist, stand-up comedian and screenwriter Varun Grover, whose previous credits include indie-hit, Masaan.

The show will be screened in 190 countries in 20 languages.

Earlier this year, Amazon Prime Video India announced its first original, tentatively titled The Forgotten Army, to be directed by Bollywood filmmaker Kabir Khan.
