The U.S. Department of Energy is accelerating efforts to finalise USD 1.7 billion in crucial grants aimed at transforming traditional auto manufacturing facilities into electric vehicle production centres, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced on Tuesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Granholm emphasised the urgency of the initiative, stating, "We are working as fast as we can to finalise as much as we can -- to get the commitments in contract with all of those who have been selected." She indicated that the department has set a timeline of "a few months" to complete the process.

The grants, initially announced in July, include substantial allocations to major automakers. General Motors is set to receive USD 500 million to convert its Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan to EV production, while Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has been allocated USD 334.8 million for its Belvidere Assembly plant conversion and an additional USD 250 million for transforming its Indiana Transmission Plant in Kokomo into an EV components facility.

However, the implementation process has not been without complications. The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has threatened strike action over delays in Stellantis'&nbsp;planned Belvidere investment, leading to legal action by the company to prevent work stoppages. When questioned about these delays, Granholm acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that "there's a whole array of considerations with respect to that and we are in conversation about it."

The political dimension of the EV transition has also come to the forefront, with UAW President Shawn Fain warning that hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs could be at risk if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wins the November 5 election and follows through on his threat to roll back EV investments. Trump has consistently argued that EV production poses a threat to American jobs, while Democrats have highlighted the reluctance of Trump's running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, to commit to maintaining the USD 500 million GM grant.

When asked about the status of the GM grant, a company spokesperson indicated they are still in the negotiation phase but declined to speculate on potential outcomes if the grant is not approved. Stellantis has not yet provided comment on the situation.
