Masks, temperature checks and no hugs with Mickey Mouse greeted visitors to Disneyland in California on Friday as Walt Disney`s original theme park reopened for the first time in over a year.

Under coronavirus pandemic guidelines, "The Happiest Place on Earth" was opened only to California residents and capacity was limited to 25% to allow for social distancing.

Guests, age 2 and older, were required to wear face masks and there were none of the usual hugs with costumed characters like Mickey Mouse and Snow White.

There will be no parades, and the nightly fireworks displays have been put on hold to prevent crowds from gathering closely together.
Tickets to Disneyland are sold out through mid-June, according to the park`s online reservation system, but there is more availability in the adjacent California Adventure.

Disneyland, located 35 miles south of Los Angeles in Anaheim, opened in 1955. Walt Disney Co closed its theme parks around the world in March 2020 to help curb the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company`s most-visited resort, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, reopened in July 2020. Disneyland Paris is currently closed. Disney parks in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong are open.

California's Disneyland re-opens but don't expect hugs from Mickey Mouse

California's health secretary on Friday agreed to hear more input from theme park operators before issuing reopening guidelines, a step that further delays Walt Disney Co's plans to welcome visitors back to Disneyland.

Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger also resigned from a California task force on reopening businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported late on Thursday. No reason was given and Disney did not respond to requests for comment.

Earlier this week, Disney said the continued closure of Disneyland had exacerbated the financial strain on its parks division from the pandemic. The company, which is in the process of laying off 28,000 employees, has urged California to let Disneyland reopen.

On Thursday, a trade group that represents Disneyland, Comcast Corp`s Universal Studios and others, said it had reviewed California`s draft guidelines and then asked the state to hear more recommendations from the industry. On Friday, Dr. Mark Ghaly, California`s health secretary, said he would continue talks with theme park operators.

"Given the size and operational complexities of these unique sectors, we are seeking additional input from health, workforce and business stakeholders to finalize this important framework - all leading with science and safety," Ghaly said in a statement.

Disneyland has been closed since March. The company had announced the resort would reopen on July 17 but later delayed the move indefinitely, saying it had to wait for the state`s guidance. All other Disney theme parks, including Walt Disney World in Florida, have reopened with limited attendance, mask requirements and other safety measures.

Disneyland reopening on hold as California delays theme park guidelines

Keeping all the possible safety precautions and instructions on place, a large portion of the Walt Disney World Resort is set to reopen on Saturday morning.

Despite the spiralling number of COVID-19 cases in Florida, the Magic Kingdom Park and Disney's Animal Kingdom Park will keep its doors open tomorrow. However, the company is making it clear that the proposed safety guidelines are not suggestions, but rules.

The official Disney World website has clearly laid down the guidelines to follow in an effort to make the adventure park as safe as possible.

"An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, senior citizens and Guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable. By visiting Walt Disney World Resort you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19," read the website's statement.

The website has cited more than six guiding principles including stress on "enhanced cleaning, physical distancing, and reduced contact."
