The DART mission was termed successful, although a lot about the asteroid remains unknown. With the aim to understand what exactly happened by Dimorphos, the European Space Agency is sending Hera to conduct a "crime scene investigation".

It is due to blast off on Monday on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Monday. However, a delay might happen after the rocket suffered an anomaly during the launch of SpaceX's Crew-9 astronaut mission on Saturday.

After being launched, the window for which remains open till Oct 27, Hera will fly past Mars next year before arriving near Dimorphos in December 2026. It will carry out a six-month investigation into the space rock.

Not only did its shape change, but it also likely created a man-made meteor shower. Another study found that the debris can reach Earth in another 10 years, besides also hitting Mars.

The mission costs $400 million, and is equipped with 12 scientific instruments and two nanosatellites. The plan is to land Juventas nanosatellite on Dimorphos, a first on such a small asteroid. It will use radar to look deep into it and measure its gravity.

The Milani nanosatellite will stay far away and use cameras and other instruments to study the asteroid's composition and assess DART's impact. Later, Hera should land gently on Dimorphos or Didymos and live out its final days.

However, Dimorphos' unexpected behaviour is not a cause for alarm, as the asteroid still poses no threat to Earth. But it could teach scientists more about asteroid deflection. No other mission before DART had ever conducted a planetary defence test. Thus, Dimorphos is the only real-world example to learn from. Scientists do not have the accurate reason behind Dimorphos' unexpected behaviour. But there are some theories. One theory suggests that Dimorphos was once tidally locked to Didymos, meaning, like Earth's moon, the same side of the satellite always faced its host. However, the DART mission might have changed its alignment, causing Dimorphos to tumble around as the system's tidal forces changed its orbit. If this theory is true, Dimorphos will likely settle back into a tidally locked state over time, a DART team member said. If the new study is accurate, it won't be the first unintended consequence of NASA's DART mission. NASA also released a series of satellite-acquired images, radar images amongst other indicators to show that the harmless asteroid, millions of miles away from the Earth was slotted away from its original orbit. Even a change of 73 seconds would have been considered a success. "Prior to DART’s impact, it took Dimorphos 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit its larger parent asteroid, Didymos," said NASA, adding the impact shortened the "11 hour and 55-minute orbit to 11 hours and 23 minutes." Meanwhile, NASA chief Bill Nelson termed the entire mission a watershed moment for the planet. "This is a watershed moment for planetary defense and a watershed moment for humanity. It felt like a movie plot, but this was not Hollywood."
