A new cervical cancer treatment that can cut the risk of death by 40 per cent in patients has been found, the most significant improvement in treating this type of cancer that affects millions of women.

According to Cancer Research UK, which funded the research, the INTERLACE trial showed that a small course of chemotherapy before the standard chemoradiation treatment can reduce the risk of death by 40 per cent, and cut recurrence chances by 35 per cent.

The new findings indicate that six weeks of induction chemotherapy before CRT can improve survival rates, much before opting for surgery.

The treatment was given to a group of patients five years ago, and 80 per cent of them are still alive, said Cancer Research UK on its website. Among the test participants, the cancer did not come back for 73 per cent.

Dr Iain Foulkes from Cancer Research UK stressed that timing is important in treating cervical cancer. “The simple act of adding induction chemotherapy to the start of chemoradiation treatment for cervical cancer has delivered remarkable results in this trial.”&nbsp;

Two already approved chemotherapy medicines were used, which are affordable and easily available, which makes the test treatment significant.&nbsp;

“This is the biggest improvement in outcome in this disease in over 20 years,”&nbsp;Dr Mary McCormack, the lead investigator of the trial from University College London’s Cancer Institute and University College London Hospital said.

“I’m incredibly proud of all the patients who participated in the trial; their contribution has allowed us to gather the evidence needed to improve treatment of cervical cancer patients everywhere,” Cancer Research UK quoted her as saying.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>What are 3D bioprinters?</h2>

Similar to conventional 3D printers, 3D bioprinters build three-dimensional objects by layering ink. The only distinction is that they employ bioinks that contain&nbsp;living cells in them.

Researchers are using 3D bioprinters to produce ear implants for children who were born with birth abnormalities, stem cell patches to treat&nbsp;babies' hearts, and cartilage for reconstructive rhinoplasty.

3D bioprinting makes it seamless to create tissues in precisely the shape and size required. Considering a patients’ own cells can be used in the ink, the risk of rejection is lowered.

However, there is still a need for invasive implantation surgeries, which bioprinting cannot yet replace.

"Current 3D bioprinting techniques need the creation of biomaterials outside the body, and implanting those into a human would often require big open-field surgical surgery, which increases the risk of infection," said Thanh Nho Do, a biomedical engineer at UNSW Sydney who spoke to Freethink.&nbsp;

<h2>How do 3D bioprinters function?</h2>

Aside from printing bioinks, the soft robot can function as an endoscope, electric scalpel, and water dispenser. Researchers have tested these functions in an artificial colon and a pig’s intestine and kidney.&nbsp;

Before considering human trials, scientists will have to conduct in vivo testing on animals. If everything goes as planned, they anticipate that the bot will be ready for clinical use in five&nbsp;to seven&nbsp;years.

Once put into the colon, the robot may remove a difficult-to-reach tumour and then 3D bioprint material to promote healing on-site. The study was conducted with 1800 patients suffering from various stages of Alzheimer’s. Eisai said that the data of the trial results will be presented at an Alzheimer’s conference in San Francisco in November.&nbsp;

There were some side effects of the drug like brain swelling and bleeding, but Eisai said they were well within their expected limits, according to a report in Washington Post.&nbsp;

Previously, the two companies tried to launch a similar drug called Aduhelm. While it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the lack of Medicare cover resulted in its discontinuation.&nbsp;

While Lecanemab has the same composition as Aduhelm, the latter has “reduced the pace of cognitive decline in people with early disease by 27% over 18 months”, the companies claimed.&nbsp;

The human trial is a partnership between Sinopharm's China National Biotec Group (CNBG), Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence and cloud computing company Group 42 (G42) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health.

The study, which began on Wednesday, is the world's first Phase III trial of an inactivated vaccine, G42 Healthcare CEO Ashish Koshy said. Inactivated vaccines are well known and have been used against diseases such as influenza and measles.

No COVID-19 vaccine has yet been approved for commercial use. According to a WHO summary of the state of vaccine development for COVID-19, there are 23 potential vaccines in human trials, with three of them in or starting large-scale late stage, or Phase III, trials to test efficacy.

The trial will test two vaccine strains and a placebo. Two doses three weeks apart will be administered and volunteers followed for a year, said Nawal Alkaabi, head of the UAE's COVID-19 Clinical Management Committee.

Around 15,000 volunteers over three to six months will be recruited, initially in Abu Dhabi. They will be 18 to 60 years of age with no serious underlying medical issues and without previous COVID-19 infection, Alkaabi said.

Sinopharm chose the United Arab Emirates because around 200 different nationalities reside there and it has a focus on medical research and fighting the pandemic, Koshy said.

The UAE says it has conducted more than 4 million coronavirus infection tests on a population of around 9.6 million. It has recorded almost 56,000 cases of infection and 335 deaths.

Sinopharm secured approval for the trial in late June. The experimental vaccine passed Phases I and II of clinical trials with 100% of volunteers generating antibodies after two doses in 28 days, an Abu Dhabi government statement said.

China has been looking overseas to trial potential vaccines because of a lack of new patients at home. China's Sinovac Biotech is conducting Phase III trials of a vaccine in Brazil.

Sinopharm and G42 would not have access to patient data in the trial which would be conducted in Abu Dhabi state hospitals, G42 Healthcare research director Walid Zaher said, adding the UAE intended to manufacture any resulting successful vaccine.

G42 is an Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence firm that has partnered with Chinese genomics company BGI to build a COVID-19 testing laboratory in the emirate and with Israeli contractors to develop technologies to help fight the disease.

Koshy said the company was privately owned but declined to say by whom.

Like other Gulf States the UAE has developed close ties with China, seeking capital and technology to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbon revenues.

However, key ally the United States has warned Gulf States to proceed with caution and to consider their relationship with Washington.

World's 1st phase 3 clinical trial of covid-19 inactivated vaccine begins

United States health authorities Wednesday launched the second human trial of a vaccine against the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which can cause birth defects and is now spreading in the US and Latin America. 
 
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Zika virus investigational DNA vaccine will be given to 80 healthy volunteers aged 18-35 at three study sites in the United States, said the federal agency. 
 
The first dose was delivered Tuesday, the NIAID said in a statement. 
 
&quot;A safe and effective vaccine to prevent Zika virus infection and the devastating birth defects it causes is a public health imperative,&quot; said NIAID director Anthony S Fauci. 
 
&quot;Results in animal testing have been very encouraging. We are pleased that we are now able to proceed with this initial study in people.&quot; 
 
Fauci, who has previously warned that any vaccine against Zika would take years to develop, described the trial&#39;s launch as &quot;an important step forward.&quot; 
 
The drug is a DNA vaccine that is similar to another experimental vaccine developed by NIAID against West Nile virus. 
 
It cannot infect people with Zika, but is designed to make the body mount an immune response to Zika. 
 
DNA vaccines &quot;have been shown to be safe in previous clinical trials for other diseases,&quot; the NIAID statement said. 
 
The first Zika vaccine trial got under way last month. 
 
Led by Pennsylvania-based Inovio Pharmaceuticals, the phase 1 trial using a Zika DNA vaccine called GLS-5700 is being conducted in Quebec City, Canada, as well as Miami and Philadelphia. 
 
Active transmission 
 
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention say more than 50 countries and territories, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean, currently have active transmission of Zika virus. 
 
The United States last month announced its first locally transmitted cases of Zika in Miami, with more than a dozen infections among non-travelers. 
 
The CDC has issued a travel warning for a square-mile area where the Zika-infected mosquitoes are believed to be lurking. 
 
There is no cure for Zika. In four out of five cases, it causes no symptoms. People who do feel sick from it may experience a rash, joint pain or eye infection. 
 
However, in pregnant women Zika can cause permanent damage to the developing fetus, including microcephaly, a condition in which the infant&#39;s skull and brain are unusually small. 
 
Women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant are urged to avoid areas where Zika is circulating, and take steps to prevent mosquito bites. 
 
Barrier methods of contraception are also recommended, since the virus can be spread by sexual contact. 
 
Initial results from the NIAID vaccine trial are expected in January 2017. If it appears safe, a phase 2 trial in Zika-endemic countries could begin soon after. 
 
A study out last month in the journal Science projected that the Zika pandemic would fizzle out in the next two to three years. 
 
Zika cannot infect the same person twice, so once a large number of people build up immunity to it, the surge in cases will subside, argued lead author Neil Ferguson, a professor at Imperial College London&#39;s School of Public Health. 
 
&quot;This means by the time we have vaccines ready to be tested, there may not be enough cases of Zika in the community to test if the vaccine works,&quot; he said.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Zika virus investigational DNA vaccine will be given to 80 healthy volunteers aged 18-35 at three study sites in the United States, said the federal agency. The first dose was delivered Tuesday, the NIAID said in a statement. "A safe and effective vaccine to prevent Zika virus infection and the devastating birth defects it causes is a public health imperative," said NIAID director Anthony S Fauci. "Results in animal testing have been very encouraging. We are pleased that we are now able to proceed with this initial study in people." Fauci, who has previously warned that any vaccine against Zika would take years to develop, described the trial's launch as "an important step forward." The drug is a DNA vaccine that is similar to another experimental vaccine developed by NIAID against West Nile virus. It cannot infect people with Zika, but is designed to make the body mount an immune response to Zika. DNA vaccines "have been shown to be safe in previous clinical trials for other diseases," the NIAID statement said. The first Zika vaccine trial got under way last month. Led by Pennsylvania-based Inovio Pharmaceuticals, the phase 1 trial using a Zika DNA vaccine called GLS-5700 is being conducted in Quebec City, Canada, as well as Miami and Philadelphia. Active transmission The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention say more than 50 countries and territories, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean, currently have active transmission of Zika virus. The United States last month announced its first locally transmitted cases of Zika in Miami, with more than a dozen infections among non-travelers. The CDC has issued a travel warning for a square-mile area where the Zika-infected mosquitoes are believed to be lurking. There is no cure for Zika. In four out of five cases, it causes no symptoms. People who do feel sick from it may experience a rash, joint pain or eye infection. However, in pregnant women Zika can cause permanent damage to the developing fetus, including microcephaly, a condition in which the infant's skull and brain are unusually small. Women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant are urged to avoid areas where Zika is circulating, and take steps to prevent mosquito bites. Barrier methods of contraception are also recommended, since the virus can be spread by sexual contact. Initial results from the NIAID vaccine trial are expected in January 2017. If it appears safe, a phase 2 trial in Zika-endemic countries could begin soon after. A study out last month in the journal Science projected that the Zika pandemic would fizzle out in the next two to three years. Zika cannot infect the same person twice, so once a large number of people build up immunity to it, the surge in cases will subside, argued lead author Neil Ferguson, a professor at Imperial College London's School of Public Health. "This means by the time we have vaccines ready to be tested, there may not be enough cases of Zika in the community to test if the vaccine works," he said. (AFP)
