China has detained four staffers of the Taiwanese iPhone maker company Foxconn, a move described by Taiwan as 'quite strange', reports said on Friday (Oct 11).

Foxconn is the world's largest iPhone producer for the American tech behemoth Apple.

The four Foxconn employees were held in mainland China. Reuters news agency quoted a statement from Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council as saying that they were held in Zhengzhou on suspicion of 'breach of trust'.

Foxconn, whose official name is&nbsp;Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, has a&nbsp;major iPhone assembly plant in Zhengzhou.

"The circumstances of this case are quite strange," Reuters quoted the Taiwanese agency as saying.

It said the case may be linked to graft and abuse of power by some Chinese security officials, without providing further details, Reuters said in the report.

The council quoted Foxconn as saying that the company didn't suffer any losses, and that the detained staff did "nothing to harm" its interests.

"This has seriously damaged the confidence of companies. We call on relevant departments on the other side of the Taiwan Strait to investigate and deal with it as soon as possible," it&nbsp;added, as per Reuters.

The developments comes months after a travel advisory issued by Taiwan to its citizens against non-essential travel to China.

The warning in June came after China threatened to execute those who supported the independence of Taiwan, a democracy that Beijing considers its territory that should be annexed by force if necessary.

The news of detention of the Foxconn staff also came just hours after the new Taiwanese president said his country would resist annexation attempts by Bejing.
