Red alert sounded in China amid fears of massive 'once-a-century' floods

This year China was expecting a bumper crop of around 137 million tonnes,&nbsp;of which 30 million tonnes will likely&nbsp;be impacted by the rain. Of this, 10 to 20 million likely sprouted, which means it is no longer fit for human consumption, said Ma.

Hurricane-force winds, hailstorms, pounding rain and a tornado killed 78 people in China's eastern province of Jiangsu today and injured nearly 500 others, out of which 200 are in a critical condition, Xinhua reported. The storms hit Yancheng city at about 2.30 pm (0630 GMT), levelling the villages, China's official news agency said.
