A female math tutor in the UK who sexually abused an underage boy and kept a diary on it has been jailed for six years, police said.

Holly Rouse-Sweeney, a 37-year-old tutor from Hebden Bridge, was given six years in jail by the Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (Aug 9).

She was initially teaching the boy online and then arranged to meet him at her county home and went on to sexually abuse him despite knowing that he was underage.

The boy's mother became suspicious after seeing inappropriate massages on WhatsApp and alerted the police in May 2023.

Upon searching her place, &nbsp;Nottinghamshire Police found diary entries in which Rouse-Sweeney detailed the abuse, even mentioning the boy's age.

She abused him several times at her former Nottinghamshire home, said Nottinghamshire Police &nbsp;in a release, "despite being aware he was under the age of consent."&nbsp;

She had pleaded guilty and attributed the abuse to a pre-existing mental health issue.

Rouse-Sweeney pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a boy, and four counts of causing a boy to engage in sexual activity, the police release said.

The tutor was added to the UK sex offenders’ register. After her release, she will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order which will tightly restrict her activities, the police said.

Rouse-Sweeney was issued a restraining order, preventing her from making any contact with the boy in future.

<h2>'A breach of trust'</h2>

“This was an appalling breach of trust by a woman who had been trusted to spend time with a vulnerable child," the police release quoted child abuse specialist Detective Constable Keeley Bringhurst as saying.

“Instead of teaching him mathematics she cynically took advantage of him for her own sexual gratification. I know this abuse has had a significant impact on the victim and his family and I hope they will be comforted by this very strong sentence,” Bringhurst said.

<h2>Not the first case in UK of female teachers abusing boys</h2>

This is not the first case of female teachers abusing boys in the UK. In July this year, a teacher who abused two teenage schoolboys and became pregnant by one of them was jailed for six-and-a-half years by Manchester Crown Court.

Rebecca Joynes, 30, had exchanged social media messages and groomed the boys from the age of 15.&nbsp;

She was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual activity with another child.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that 12.6 per cent&nbsp;of the world's children have been victims of nonconsensual communication, sharing, and exposure to sexual images and videos over the past year, equating to approximately 302 million young people.

Around 12.5 per cent&nbsp;had been subject to online solicitation, such as unnecessary sexual talk that can include sexting, sexual questions and sexual act requests by adults or other youths.

The research also suggested that the US is a particularly high-risk area. The University of Edinburgh's Childlight initiative, which aims to understand the prevalence of child abuse, includes a new global index revealing that one in nine men in the US—equivalent to nearly 14 million—have admitted to online offences against children at some point.

The surveys further found that 7 per cent&nbsp;of British men, equivalent to 1.8 million, admitted the same.

The chief executive of Childlight, Paul Stanfield, said, “This is surprising that UK alone equates to forming a line of male offenders that could stretch all the way from Glasgow to London – or filling Wembley Stadium 20 times over."

“Child abuse material is so widespread that files are on average reported to watchdog and policing organisations once every second. This is a global health pandemic that has stayed hidden for far too long. It happens in every country, it’s growing exponentially, and it requires a global response,” Stanfield added.&nbsp;

“An urgent action needs to be taken and treat it as a public health issue that can be prevented. Children can’t wait.”

The new figures have revealed that other children had committed more than half of child sexual abuse offences reported in 2022. 
 
The police said that the rise in child-on-child abuse has been because of the easy access of smartphones and violent pornography to children. 
 
The data collected from 42 police forces in England and Wales showed that around 106,984 child sexual abuse offences were reported in 2022, which is an increase of 7.6 per cent from the previous year and more than five times the 20,000 cases recorded in 2013. 
 
In the landmark report, it was found that in 52 per cent of these cases, a child&nbsp;between the age of 10 to 17&nbsp;was involved as a suspect or perpetrator, which is up from a third in 2013.

As per the researchers, a four-year-old child, who had uploaded a sibling's indecent image to the internet through a smartphone, was the youngest child to have been reported by the police.

Till now, the police registered reports of 14,800 rapes and sexual assaults against children, between the age of 10 to 17, where the police had classed the suspect as a child and the overwhelming majority were boys.

“Clearly the accessibility to smartphones has just rocketed, not just in relation to 11- to 16-year-olds, but in relation to under-10s as well. That accessibility has really exacerbated that and I think this is a debate that does need to be had in our society,” Critchley said. 
 
It was also reported that a third of attacks take place within the family which is the most common setting for abuse, and eight out of 10 victims had known their attacker in the past. The police said that it is estimated that only a few, like one in six offences, were reported to them.

The Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a charity that works to prevent&nbsp;child sexual abuse in the UK, has launched a website called "Shore" to help teenagers deal with their sexual thoughts and behaviour cropping from pornography, the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

The first&nbsp;of its kind in Europe, the website is one of only three in the world. It offers a chat and e-mail service for teenagers (aged 13 to 18) to contact them anonymously.

Child abuse experts and police officials have been issuing warnings over the increased access to pornography which is driving a harmful rise in the sexual behaviour of teens, from sexting to watching online child abuse videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The charity said that they saw a 30 per cent increase in under 18 contacting them and a 26 per cent rise in adults contacting them concerned about the behaviour of the youngsters.

Senior practitioner at the charity, Rachel Haynes said that since the COVID-19 lockdown, their "Stop It Now!" helpline, originally designed for adults, received more calls from teenagers.&nbsp;

Rachel told the Guardian, "As a service we have seen an increase in under-18s contacting us for support. We particularly began to see it when we launched a chat service for adults during lockdown."

"Porn is a contributing factor – teenagers become desensitised to what they are seeing. Sometimes they have been groomed by adults, or have been sent illegal images during sexualised chats online."

Rachel hopes that Shore will help change the lack of opportunity for talking about online harm and provide a safe space for teenagers to talk openly.
