Vice Admiral Karambir Singh has been appointed the next Chief of Naval Staff. Singh will be replacing Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba who will vacate the office on May 31, 2019.&nbsp;

Singh PVSM, AVSM, at present, holds the position of Flag Officer Commanding in Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. He assumed office on 31 October 2017 after Vice Admiral HCS Bisht retired.

Singh was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1980. He is a graduate of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai.&nbsp;

In a career spanning nearly four decades, Singh earned extensive experience commanding numerous ships, like ICGS Chand Bibi, INS Vijaydurg, among others, and flying the HAL Chetak and Kamov Ka-25 helicopters.&nbsp;

For his service, Singh has been awarded the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Param Vishist Seva Medal.&nbsp;

India&#39;s Chief of naval staff Sunil Lamba said today that the frequent instances of transgression by China&#39;s People&#39;s Liberation Army across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the recent stand-off at Doklam were an indication of 
China&#39;s increasing assertiveness as it &quot;as it makes rapid progress economically and militarily&quot;.

The Chief of naval staff added that the recent transgressions by China had also underscored the vulnerability of the Siliguri corridor.&nbsp;

The LAC is the border that separates India from China in Arunachal Pradesh.

Chinese and Indian troops were locked in the border standoff in the disputed Doklam region near Sikkim from June 16 to August 28 when Indian soldiers stopped Chinese personnel from constructing a key road near the strategic Siliguri Corridor also known as the &quot;chicken&#39;s neck.

The road was being built by China in an area also claimed by Bhutan.&nbsp;

The Siliguri Corridor is a narrow stretch of land in West Bengal, that connects the northeastern states to the rest of India.

West Bengal&#39;s city of Siliguri is a major settlement in this area.
