The residential neighbourhood of the city was brought to a standstill, including the house of Indian film star Rajnikanth. <p>The incessant downpour led to traffic snarls, crippled public transportation services and also led to cancellations of several domestic flights. Several trains were also diverted, some even stopped ahead of Chennai Central Railway Station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the well-marked low-pressure area has intensified into a depression and is expected to cross the Chennai coast on October 17 morning.</p>

<p>"Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts," the IMD bulletin stated.</p>

<p>Waterlogging was a common sight in several parts of the state, causing floods in many areas of Chennai.</p>

<p>As per the IMD's classification, heavy rainfall amounts to 6.4–11.5 cm of downpour in 24 hours, whereas very heavy rainfall amounts to 11.5 cm to 20.4 cm in 24 hours. In case of extremely heavy rainfall, it is more than 20.4 cm in 24 hours.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><b>NDRF teams on alert; state government monitoring situation</b></h2>

<p>Ten teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising a total of 300 personnel, are on standby at Arakkonam, near Chennai. In addition to this, one team has already been pre-positioned in Chennai city for any immediate requirements. NDRF teams are working in close coordination with the State authorities to render assistance at the required time and place.</p>

<p>Each of these NDRF teams are prepared with rubber boats, tree-cutting chainsaws, communications equipment, ropes and harnesses, first aid kits, etc.</p>
