Bangladesh security forces on Monday killed at least two people suspected of belonging to an Islamist militant group behind a deadly cafe attack in Dhaka in 2016, police said after a raid at a tin-shed hideout in the capital.

Police cordoned off the area after receiving information about the presence of suspected members of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, a home-grown militant group that killed 22 people in the cafe attack.

"When our forces knocked on the door, the residents of the house fired at our people instead of opening it," Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of the legal and media wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), told reporters. "Then members of the RAB responded. There is still huge amount of explosives and our special force are trying to remove it."

Khan said three people, including the owner of the house, had been detained for questioning.

Bangladesh launched a crackdown on militancy after the cafe attack as part of what Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina calls a "zero tolerance" policy.

Militants attacked the cafe in July 2016, taking 22 hostages, mostly foreigners, who were killed over 12 hours.

Mamunur Rashid was a key "decision-maker" in Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a banned homegrown Islamist militant outfit blamed for the attack.&nbsp;

The 30-year-old was arrested while travelling on a bus outside the capital Dhaka, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, a spokesman for the elite Rapid Action Battalion.&nbsp;

Rashid "supplied money, arms, ammunition, and explosives for the attack," Khan told reporters.&nbsp;

"He hid in a neighbouring country and tried to reorganise the group. They were also planning to rescue their accomplices from custody."

A former computer operator and Islamic seminary student, Rashid also provided logistical support to Islamists involved in several deadly attacks on religious minorities in the country's north, Khan said.

A court in Dhaka last month put eight militants on trial over the cafe attack.

Khan said Rashid was one of the two men charged in absentia, while the other six were already in custody.

The Holey Artisan Bakery siege fuelled fears over violent Islamist groups in the Muslim-majority nation of 165 million people.

The government also launched a nationwide crackdown against extremists immediately after the attack, killing nearly 100 alleged extremists in gunfights including several top JMB leaders.

The attack marked a violent escalation from a spate of high-profile murders in the country since 2013, with extremists targeting Bangladeshi atheist writers, rights activists, gays, foreigners, and religious minorities.

Bangladesh last week banned the release of a film based on the cafe attack, saying it would tarnish the country's image.

Days after the alleged key mastermind of the country&#39;s worst terror attack was killed, Bangladesh police today said they have identified 10 more people who planned or provided weapons and money to militants for storming a Dhaka cafe on July 1.&nbsp; 
 
&quot;We have gathered data about 10 people who planned or provided money and weapon for the attack,&quot; police&#39;s Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime unit chief Monirul Islam told reporters, confirming a media report. 
 
His comments came as the mass circulation Prothom Alo earlier today carried a report quoting &quot;investigation sources&quot; that they have identified the 10 suspected culprits and &quot;unearthed the current location&quot; of six of them. 
 
Bangladeshi-Canadian Tamim Chowdhury, who is believed to be the mastermind of the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery here was killed on August 27 along with two other militants in a security raid at a hideout in suburban Narayanganj on the outskirts of the capital. 
 
The July 1 attack had killed 22 people, including 16 foreigners and an Indian girl. 
 
Police earlier said the operational commander of the attack, Marzan, was one of the nine militants who were killed in last month&#39;s raid on their hideout in the capital.&nbsp;
