Over 33,000 employees of Mumbai's civic transport undertaking BEST went on an indefinite strike since midnight over their demands, including higher wages, paralysing bus services and causing inconvenience to nearly 25-lakh daily commuters.

Responding to a call given by their union leaders, the agitating staff did not take out any bus from all 27 depots on Tuesday, even as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) administration and an industrial court declared the strike as "illegal".

The BEST has a fleet of over 3,200-red-colour buses which criss-cross the metropolis and also operate services in the neighbouring Thane district and Navi Mumbai. It is the second-biggest mode of transport in Mumbai after local trains, which ferry over 80-lakh passengers every day.

The employees are demanding higher salaries, merging budget of the loss-making BEST with that of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), deliberations on new wage agreement, resuming appointments on compassionate grounds and bonus equivalent to that of the civic body employees.

With its employees having gone on strike, the cash-strapped BEST is likely to face a loss of Rs 3 crore per day, a source said.

Shashank Rao, leader of the BEST Workers' Union, which has called the strike, alleged that the transport body's administration showed a lackadaisical approach in resolving the stalemate and that the employees had no option but to go on strike.

An industrial court had on Monday declared the strike as illegal and restrained the labour unions and BEST staffers from going ahead with their protest. But, Rao said they had not received the copy of the court order till they went on strike.

Meanwhile, some commuters opposed the strike, saying it was always the passengers who bore the brunt of the feud between the BEST administration and its employees.

"Why torture innocent passengers? What wrong have we done to BEST employees and their management?" asked Anita Nayak, a Ghatkopar resident who commutes by bus everyday to go for work in suburban Mulund.

The Amchi Mumbai-Amchi Best (AMAB), an independent forum of public transport enthusiasts, took a neutral stand and said the matter should be resolved as soon as possible.

"No doubt commuters are going to face hardships, but it is also true that the BEST workers have also been not paid enough. No harm if BEST is merged with the BMC," a member of the forum said.

Meanwhile, the BEST management has issued internal circulars, warning employees of stringent action if they participated in the strike. It has also threatened to invoke the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) against them.&nbsp;

In a blog post titled &#39;Master Plan, Part Deux&#39;, Musk sketched a vision of an integrated carbon-free energy enterprise offering a wider range of vehicles, and products and services beyond electric cars and batteries. 
 
The newest elements of the strategy included plans to develop cars and ride sharing programs, as well as commercial vehicles, businesses where other companies already compete, and in some cases, have ample head starts on Tesla. 
 
The new vehicles range from a commercial truck called the Tesla Semi to a public transport bus, a &quot;new kind of pickup truck&quot; and a compact SUV. The vehicles will be unveiled next year alongside Tesla&#39;s existing fleet of electric cars. 
 
Musk restated his argument that Tesla should acquire solar panel installer SolarCity Corp, where he is a major shareholder, and said he aims to make Tesla&rsquo;s autopilot self-driving system 10 times safer than cars that humans drive manually. 
 
The plan did not detail how the new projects would be financed at a time when Both Tesla and SolarCity are burning through cash. 
 
Musk summarised the plan saying Tesla aimed to &quot;create stunning solar roofs (for homes) with seamlessly integrated battery storage. Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland will be setting up a bus assembly plant in Kenya with an investment of 700 million Indian Rupee as part of its global expansion plans. 
 
&quot;We are setting up a bus assembly plant in Kenya through a wholly-owned subsidiary. This plant will have an annual capacity of 1,200 buses,&quot; Ashok Leyland senior vice-president (Global Buses), T Venkataraman told PTI. 
 
He said the setting up of the Kenya plant will begin this quarter itself. 
 
&quot;This plant will also serve as an export hub for three neighbouring countries, besides meeting local demand in Kenya,&quot; he added. 
 
Amid tough global market conditions, the company has been working to enhance its international presence. The company already has a manufacturing facility at Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, which was set up as a joint venture with the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA). 
 
The plant has an annual capacity of 2,000 vehicles and caters to demand of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and African markets from the plant. 
 
Ashok Leyland&#39;s overall commercial vehicles exports, however, have been in decline so far this fiscal, which stood at 2,226 units in April-June, down 34.16 per cent from the year-ago period. 
 
Besides conventional buses, Ashok Leyland has been focusing on new technology such as hybrids through its UK arm Optare Plc, in which it holds a 75.1 per cent stake. 
 
Optare operates a range of &#39;low carbon&#39;, low-floor, mid-sized and modern range of city buses in the UK, Europe and North America, among others.
