<p>West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee&nbsp;slammed the Indian government for objecting to her remarks about offering shelter to Bangladeshi refugees&nbsp;fleeing the country in the wake of violent protests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mamata enlisted her credentials of serving as a minister in various capacities and said the government should not be teaching her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I know the federal structure very well. I was an MP seven times, I was a Union minister twice. I know the MEA policy better than anyone else. They shouldn’t teach me a lesson; they should learn from the system instead," said Mamata.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mamata's statement comes a day after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a briefing confirmed that Bangladesh had conveyed its objection to the statements made by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I can confirm that we have received such a communication from the Bangladesh side. It is on the lines described in the reports,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday.</p>

<p>On Wednesday (Jul 24) Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud stated that his ministry sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With due respect to the West Bengal Chief Minister, with whom we share a very close relationship, we want to make it clear that her comments have a lot of scope for confusion. Therefore, we have given a note to the Government of India," Mahmud said.</p>

<p>In light of the student&nbsp;protests in Bangladesh, Mamata while addressing a rally declared that West Bengal would open its&nbsp;doors to the refugees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If helpless people come knocking on the doors, we will surely provide them shelter." Banerjee justified her stance by referring to the United Nations resolution on refugees.</p>

<p>"This is because there is a United Nations declaration to accommodate refugees in regions adjacent to those in turmoil," the West Bengal CM added.</p>

<p>Violence hit a peak in Bangladesh last week before the Supreme Court intervened and slashed most of the quotas. The court ordered the quota for&nbsp;veterans and their families to be cut to five per cent, with 93 per cent of jobs to be allocated on merit.</p>

<p>The remaining two per cent will be set aside for members of ethnic minorities and&nbsp;transgender and disabled people.</p>
