South Africa bans alcohol sales & tightens curbs as coronavirus cases soars

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in India’s Supreme Court seeking a ban on liquor and other intoxicating drinks and drugs across the country.

The PIL, based on Article 47 read with Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, will be heard in the court on September 30.

Delhi-based lawyer and a member of the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Kumar Upadhyay expressed concerns related to alcohol abuse on public health and safety and said that right to health and safety were integral to right to life guaranteed under Article 21.

The petitioner has thus sought a complete ban on sale of liquor except for medicinal purposes also urging the government to further create awareness on its ill effects through school curriculum and a designated health day every month.

“Superior ideals envisaged under the Directive Principles of State Policy, from Article 38 to Article 47 cannot be achieved without complete ban on liquors and other intoxicating drinks and drugs,” the PIL stated.

The petitioner added that states like Gujarat, Bihar in India had already prohibited liquor and other intoxicating drinks and drugs. The crime rates in these states had decreased due to this, he observed.
