<p>Never in my wildest imagination did I think that a Bollywood film featuring two commercial stars like Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor would give me history lessons on World War II and Hitler.&nbsp;Don't get me wrong, I do not think that the actors are not capable of being associated with something as serious as World War, they have proved their mettle in several films before and are stellar performers if given the right script, but in Nitesh Tiwari's latest film <em>Bawaal</em>, the two actors meander through a convoluted plot which is a coming of age saga with World War II as the backdrop.&nbsp;<br />

Now, the trailer of <em>Bawaal</em> had left me, like many others, very confused. I simply could not fathom how the holocaust and present-day Lucknow could be connected. But the film does. Writer Ashwini Iyer Tiwari's flight to fantasy connects Ajay, a local star of Lucknow, to one of the worst chapters of history. The film has Dhawan playing Ajay or Ajju, a middle school history teacher, who is more concerned about his image in the city of Lucknow than his students and the subject he teaches. Ajju has created an image of himself as an extraordinary person with multiple talents across the city. His stories are narrated in Lucknow almost like folklore. But Ajju in reality is a deeply insecure, frustrated man- unhappy with his job, his life, and his marriage to Nisha (Kapoor).&nbsp;<br />

Ajju's lack of enthusiasm and knowledge of history lands him in trouble at school and he is suspended temporarily. The man is more perturbed about the dent the suspension would bring to the image that he has so carefully created for himself all these years.&nbsp;<br />

In order to keep his image intact, he decides to take a trip to Europe- specifically to cities that have historical importance to the world war. His genius idea involves him and Nisha travelling to European cities like Paris, Berlin,&nbsp;Amsterdam and Auschwitz and from there sending his students, lessons of World War II-&nbsp;a chapter that he could not cover due to his suspension. While his admirers hail the decision his own family is sceptical about his intentions. As the two land in Paris- their first stop in the Europe&nbsp;trip- self-discovery happens first for Nisha and eventually for Ajju as they both rediscover life, the struggles that humanity faced during the World War, and the futility of conflict and way in general.&nbsp;<br />

Bollywood has over the years made several coming-of-age films. In that sense, <em>Bawaal </em>doesn't serve us anything new. However, it is how the writer connects World War to a man's self-realization that makes this film unique. And while on paper it may have appeared to be a great idea (and somewhat far-fetched in my opinion), it somehow doesn't reflect that smartly on screen. Nitesh Tiwari, in the past, has given us two terrific films like&nbsp;<em>Dangal</em> and <em>Chhichhore</em> and so the expectation from<em> Bawaal</em> is high. However, the film ends up being a middling affair. It neither provokes any emotions in scenes where the director ably depicts some horrific episodes of World War II, nor does it create an impact on Ajju's progression in the story. &nbsp;The backdrop of the war as a tool of self-discovery seems rather misplaced, especially when the two plots are literally from different eras.&nbsp;<br />

The makers try to take up too many issues in one film, thereby making it a convoluted storyline. There is Ajju and Nisha's love story, and how they rediscover their feelings for each other during the trip, there is also a portion about the futility of war, then Ajju's journey of becoming content with his life, the importance of appreciating what one has in life instead of what one yearns for- all this is placed in the same story - and the result is not the best. The narrative ever so often switches to black and white to depict the war and then changes back to colour to give a perspective of the leads. It's almost like watching Ranbir Kapoor's journey of coming of age in any of his blockbuster films but with World War II forcibly thrust down our necks and being persistently told that a man-child's journey to becoming an adult is connected to a war that took place over eight decades back.<br />

The actors are credible in their parts. Manoj Pahwa, Janhvi Kapoor, and Varun Dhawan do justice to their part but are often led down by poorly written screenplay. The only portions that were well-written involved Dhawan and a bunch of Gujarati tourists on the same flight to Paris. Their bags get exchanged and the faux pas that ensues is hilarious. Of course, it does generalize the Gujarati community, but still provides the laughs.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Bawaal</em> demands you to indulge the writer and director with their story which seems like a stretch in every aspect. Over the years, there have been several films made on World War II that have not only highlighted the mammoth tragedy that the human race had to face at that time but also beautifully highlighted the lessons that we all need to learn from history. <em>Bawaal, </em>unfortunately, is not that film. It provides a convoluted love story wrapped in lessons of history- that can be bunked. <em>Bawaal </em>is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.&nbsp;</p>

Bawaal review: Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor's film is a misplaced lesson in history

In a poignant scene in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s ‘Panga’, as Jaya’s husband and son come to see her off at the station, instead of bidding them farewell, she starts quizzing the two most important men in her life about what all needs to be done at home every day in her absence.

In a poignant scene in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s ‘Panga’, as Jaya’s husband and son come to see her off at the station, instead of bidding them farewell, she starts quizzing the two most important men in her life about what all needs to be done at home every day in her absence. How many ml of cough syrup does the son have, what time does his school bus come, how many whistles does it take to boil the daal- hurriedly revising the daily routine before she embarks on a difficult journey- givings wings to her long-suppressed dream. The scene, along with few other similar moments sum up the ‘Panga’ beautifully and narrates the most heartwarming story of a mother who dares to dream for herself at a time when most are wanting to give up. Jaya Nigam's(Kangana Ranaut) life seems picture-perfect when the film begins. She has a government job, lives in Bhopal with husband Prashant(Jassie Gill), an engineer in the Railways and an over-curious 7-year-old son Adi. While she is a dedicated wife, a loving and anxious mother and a perfect homemaker- in the daily humdrum of life she misses her first love the most. She was a National level Kabaddi player once upon a time- and amid domesticity, Jaya misses the court and her old self the most. Mind you, she has the most supporting family around and Jaya left sports out of her own will to take care of her son who is born with a medical condition yet she admits to her ever understanding husband then when she looks at herself, she doesn't feel happy. The son is a sprightly young boy who insists on her comeback and the couple agrees to humour him for a month. But Jaya soon realises that this is her calling and she wants to again get back to the game. But taking up sports post domesticity is never easy- a fact that Jaya discovers with every push, every sprint and every bout of game. The beauty of 'Panga' lies in its simplicity. Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari along writes a very detailed screenplay with Nikhil Mehrotra which never overimagines or overdramatizes the narrative. The family of three lives in modest government accommodation in Bhopal, where the set up is just like any ordinary middle-class household and not a slick Instagram friendly household. As Jaya starts training, her rise is never shown as meteoric- she struggles, grapples to first maintain a balance between her family and professional life, then to prove to the world that she still has it her to make it to the Indian team with a body that needs 'oiling'. Sports dramas mostly narrate stories of underdogs, of triumphing over odds. The approach is mostly dramatic- but that is not the case with 'Panga'. Mehrotra and Tiwari along with an additional screenplay by Nitesh Tiwari, find beauty in the everyday routine. There is no oppressive husband here, no critically ill child or parent, no financial hardship- yet Jaya wants to get back to her first love- something that a lot of us can relate to. As Jaya leaves for medical camp, the husband tries to manage the household- as promised to her- and fails quite often much to the son's dismay. The parathas are served burnt, the bed is never made, the food is too oily, even the tiger make up for the school annual function goes awry - things that are part of the daily life start becoming glaringly different because the woman of the house is gone. The actors are pitch-perfect in their respective roles. Be it the helpful neighbour who often takes care of the child when the parents are away at work, to the helpful roommate that Jaya meets at camp who like a younger sister guides helps her overcome her shortcomings in the game to the central characters who all cheer Jaya to dream one more time. It is refreshing to see Kangana Ranaut play someone so normal and relatable like Jaya. She has over the past few years made her mark playing eccentric characters which have often been compared to her real-life persona, but perhaps Ranauat channelizes her mother and scores of other middle-class mothers in India while playing Jaya. Understated, restraint and very elegant. Jaya is like every other middle-class Indian woman who goes the extra mile to ensure their families get everything and often put their desires and aspirations to rest for domestic bliss. Ably supporting Kangana Ranaut is singer-actor Jassie Gill, who never oversteps and plays the supportive husband and doting father to the hilt. There's something really endearing about Gill's personality which makes him perfect for the role of the supportive Prashant. Neena Gupta plays Jaya's mother who is just as spirited as a person as her daughter. Richa Chadha as Meenu, Jaya's best friend and coach, gets the funny lines and delivers a commendable performance in the limited screen time that she has. The star of the film though is young actor Yagya Bhasin who plays Jaya's son Adi- a bright talented find who emotes through his big bright eyes and doesn't have a single false note. His scenes with Gill are so endearing to watch and the two make for a very good father-son duo- complementing each other with great performances. The filmmaker who has in the past made films like 'Nil Battey Sannata' and 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' and has by now completely aced the depiction of the societies in small-town India- where they are slowly getting accustomed to modernity but still are rooted to traditions and cultures. It's that good and that real. The writers show Jaya rubbing off the Indian captain Smita (Smita Tambe) the wrong way in the second half which may appear a tad dramatic and unnecessary but ultimately they put together such a riveting, gripping, sensitive story that this little dramatization can be easily overlooked. 'Panga' works for its performances, it's an inspiring story and its detailed screenplay. But above all its Ashwini Iyer Tiwari's ode to mothers- the unsung heroes of our lives and that should be a good enough reason to watch the film.

'Panga' review: Kangana Ranaut's film is a heartwarming tribute to mothers

<p>A film on Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy is now in works and none other than director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari is helming the project. Speaking about the film, Ashwini called it more than a film, “this is life.”</p>

<p>The announcement was made on Instagram as Ashwini shared a picture of a black-and-white photo of her and Sudha and captioned it, "Two opposite personalities. I don't have a picture with Mr Narayan Murthy. But spent hours chatting with Sudha Maa - that's what I call her now. Been working for almost 21 years now. Started off with designing events and logos while studying in art school. I needed the money to feed my art supplies and education. Then joined as an art trainee at Leo Burnett. Spent 16 years in advertising and marketing with the most amazing people who are my dearest friends too."</p>

<p>"Left advertising in 2015 to an unknown world of Bollywood only for the passion of telling stories. #NilBatteySannata #Ammakanakku #BareillykiBarfi happened. #Panga is an important story that needs to be told.</p>

<p>"I keep dreaming that eventually, I would want to lead a life like Narayan Murthy &amp; Sudha Murthy. The life choices. Their honest life with integrity is my biggest inspiration. I am filled with humble gratitude to make Murthy. They have trusted me with their iconic story and i can only pray that I keep up to their expectations. This is more than a film. This is life," she added.</p>

<p>Her husband and filmmaker, Nitesh Tiwari will also be a part of the film.</p>

I don't have a picture with Mr Narayan Murthy. But spent hours chatting with Sudha Maa - that's what I call her now. Been working for almost 21 years now. <p>As actor Neena Gupta on Wednesday wrapped up shooting for her part in upcoming sports film <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/kangana-ranaut-richa-chadha-starrer-panga-first-look-out-to-release-on-this-date-201875">`Panga`</a>, director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari couldn`t have a message sweeter than this for her!</p>

<p>"Today was Neena Mam`s last day on Panga All I can say is we go beyond the actor-director relationship," Ashwiny wrote on Instagram.</p>

<p>Detailing her relationship with the veteran actor, the director expressed that the two are `friends for life` and went on saying, "We are friends for life who chat about everything under the sun. There were times when we had serious overwhelming talk too that went into smiles of transparent innermost thoughts.</p>

<p>"That`s how we understood each other," she added.</p>

<p>After singing praises of Neena, Ashwiny summed up her post by thanking her and wrote, "In silence. In the expression of oneness. Thank-you so much for your precious time and role and making Panga a part of you. I am great full for life and our story of friendship will only continue."</p>

<p>She also shared a selfie with the actor in her post. While Ashwiny showered all her love on Neena, the latter also reciprocated the love in comments as she wrote, "Love you."</p>

<p>Swara Bhaskar also complimented Neena in the comments by writing, "Ma`am is the BEST! Nuff said!!"The last schedule of the film shooting began somewhere earlier in June as the director herself revealed through a post.</p>

<p>Richa Chaddha who will also be seen in a significant role in the movie wrapped up shooting in June after which Ashwiny thanked her for `bringing out the best of her`.</p>

<p>The upcoming sports-drama will feature Kangana as a Kabaddi player. Apart from her and Richa, the film will also feature Punjabi singer Jassie Gill, and Neena Gupta in the pivotal roles.</p>

<p>`Panga` is scheduled to release next year on January 24.</p>

<p>Kangana is also awaiting the release of her upcoming film <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/rajkumar-rao-and-kangana-ranaut-channel-their-inner-swag-in-the-wakhra-song-234040">`Judgementall Hai Kya`</a> where she will be seen sharing the screen with Rajkummar Rao.</p>
