Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness will be visiting India this week, as India-Caribbean engagement grows. He will be in India from September 30 to October 3 and will be holding a meeting&nbsp;with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This will be PM Andrew's first visit to India, and also the first-ever bilateral visit by a Jamaican PM to India. The visiting head of government will&nbsp;also call on the Indian president and vice president.&nbsp;A number of MoUs are expected to be signed during the visit, giving a boost to bilateral ties.

From strong people ties to development partnerships and passion for cricket, the two countries have numerous key areas of convergence.&nbsp;PM Modi and his Jamaican counterpart have met several times in the past, especially in 2018, on the sidelines of various summits: CHOGM in April 2018 in London, BRICS Summit in South Africa in July 2018 and at G20 Summit in Argentina in December 2018.

Training and capacity building is the main pillar of bilateral relations and over the years, more than 360 Jamaican nationals have been trained in various institutions in India under the ITEC programme.

The Caribbean country has signed and ratified the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and is now a full-fledged member of the group. In 2021, India gifted 50,000 doses of ‘Made in India’ COVID-19 vaccine to the country. Delhi has also been playing a key role in various projects in the country, including a rural development project in Kitson Town and gave Flood Lights for Sabina Park Stadium, and 100 cricket kits to the Jamaica Cricket Association.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Wednesday (August 14) declared a state of emergency in the Caribbean nation's southern Clarendon parish after eight people were killed in separate gun attacks on Sunday night, including a seven-year-old boy.

"This is an opportunity for the government to mobilize fully to have a very serious focus&nbsp;on&nbsp;gangs," Holness told a press conference at his office. "We cannot allow murders to be normalized in our&nbsp;country."

The prime minister did not immediately detail what regulations would be imposed, but these can typically involve nightly curfews, longer detention periods without formal charges and the ability by police to search properties without warrants.

Holness said he hoped the measure would prevent reprisal killings, saying intelligence had warned there was a "very high probability" of retaliation attempts.

Five people have been arrested so far in relation with Sunday's shootings, Holness said.

Jamaica&nbsp;last year ranked as the second-deadliest country in the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to a study by Insight Crime, with 60.9 homicides per 100,000 people, second only to the small island state of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Holness noted that while the number of gangs estimated to be active in the country has shrunk from 400 to 185 in five years, the figures remain "very high."

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has been looking to clamp down on rising gun violence through stronger law enforcement and stemming imports of illegal firearms.

Around 87% of guns traced in the Caribbean come from the United States, according to U.S. government data.

The United States advises its citizens to reconsider travel to&nbsp;Jamaica&nbsp;due to crime, and to avoid Clarendon altogether, ranking the parish as "off-limits" for its embassy personnel.
