Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that affordable air taxis will soon become a reality in India as the government prepares the country for advanced air mobility. Speaking at the Aviation Ministerial Conference in the national capital, PM Modi underscored how the expanding middle class is the biggest growth driver in the aviation industry. The two-day conference was attended by nearly 300 representatives from 29 countries.&nbsp;

PM Modi said that air travel has become more inclusive and affordable thanks to the regional connectivity scheme which allows more people from smaller cities to travel via airplanes. Since the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, some 14 million people have flown via airplanes, reflecting better connectivity and rise in demand in the civil aviation sector.

He further stressed that India is India is the fastest-growing aviation market globally and that the airlines have ordered 1,200 aircraft so far. He added that while it is a growing sector, it requires constant technological innovation and trained workforce to keep it going.&nbsp;

What is UDAN scheme? 
UDAN stands for Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik, which is a government-backed Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) to improve air connectivity in the country, particularly in remote and underserved regions. The first UDAN flight, inaugurated by the PM, took off from Shimla to Delhi on April 27, 2017.&nbsp;

The objectives of the scheme include making air travel affordable for the masses by increasing regional air connectivity at reasonable rates. It focuses on promoting balanced regional growth by enabling air operations on underserved and unserved routes. The scheme also focuses on improving infrastructure and connectivity for civil aviation in the country.&nbsp;

Under the UDAN scheme, the airfare for a one-hour journey by a 'fixed wing aircraft' or half an hour's journey by a helicopter for about 500 km, has been fixed at INR 2500.

Nikhil Goel, the Chief Commercial Officer of Archer Aviation, stated that India is poised to become the largest market for electric air taxis globally, with a launch planned for 2026 that is set to transform urban transportation. Archer Aviation, based in California, specialises in electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft, commonly referred to as air taxis. These vehicles operate similarly to traditional helicopters, taking off and landing vertically, but they are electric, resulting in reduced emissions and significantly quieter operation.

The company's aircraft, named Midnight, is designed to accommodate four passengers and a pilot, with a range of up to 160 kilometers. Goel emphasised the challenges posed by increasing urban populations and declining transportation options, particularly in India, which is the target of Archer's efforts. He expressed confidence that India will emerge as a leading market for electric air taxis during his remarks at the ET World Leaders Forum, saying, “I am confident that India will not only be one of, but perhaps the largest market for electric air taxis in the world.”

The strategy for Archer's air taxi services aims to mirror IndiGo's successful model by increasing trip frequency and lowering costs through economies of scale. India becomes the third country, following the United States and the UAE, where Archer intends to launch operations. The company plans to cater to IndiGo passengers traveling to and from airports, tapping into the airline's monthly passenger volume of approximately 9 million.

Currently, Archer is navigating the certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States and has secured Part 135 certification, allowing it to transport passengers in a manner akin to airlines. He mentioned, “We have been working with InterGlobe for over a year, analyzing routes in some of India’s largest cities. We see tremendous potential and support from everyone we meet, including municipal leaders and federal regulators”. NASA researchers at the Armstrong Flight Research Centre in California have built a custom virtual reality (VR) flight simulator to study passenger comfort and experience in future air taxi services.&nbsp;

The simulator features a movable platform that can realistically simulate the motion of an air taxi, combined with VR visuals and spatialized audio to create an immersive experience.

NASA test pilot Wayne Ringelberg recently completed test rides in the simulator, providing feedback to the research team on the realism of the visual, motion and audio cues.

This simulator is the centerpiece of NASA Armstrong's VR passenger ride quality laboratory, which aims to gather data on how passengers respond to the motions, vibrations, noise and visual stimuli they may encounter during air taxi flights.

Over the next four years, NASA will conduct a series of human subject studies using the simulator. Participants will wear VR headsets and be secured in the moving platform, then asked to indicate any discomfort they experience as they virtually fly through a simulated urban environment.&nbsp;
