Afghan president Ashraf Ghani launched his country's e-ID scheme in Kabul today. the IDs are seen as important ahead of assembly and presidential polls over the next 12 months.

With first lady Rula Ghani and other senior leaders present, President Ghani becomes the first Afghan to receive a national e-ID card. The scheme intends to formalise identity cards across the country.&nbsp

President Ghani talked about recent suicide attacks, saying fake IDs were a crucial aspect. The cards are also being seen as a way to root out corruption in government schemes.&nbsp

However, minorities like the Hazaras, Tajiks and Uzbeks have been protesting against the ethnicity entry for I-cards.&nbsp

Their argument is that declaring ethnicity as Afghans is discriminatory as that is linked to the majority Pashtuns.

Voting for the Afghan parliamentary and district council elections will take place on October 20.

The presidential polls will take place in 2019.
