Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48 by the Senate — the closest Senate confirmation vote in over a century. He was accused by Dr Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor of pschology, of trying to rape her as a teenager.&nbsp;

Dr Blasey Ford said the alleged attack on her took place in 1982 when she was 15 and Kavanaugh was 17. She said a drunk Kavanaugh had got on top of her and tried to remove her clothing while clamping his other hand on her mouth to stop her from screaming.&nbsp;

Ford said she had been worried Kavanaugh might accidentally kill her.&nbsp;

She said a friend of Kavanaugh's — Mark Judge — had been in the room at the time, and that the two of them had "laughed uproarily" at the situation she had found herself in. &nbsp;

The accusation and its fallout had further cleaved an already deeply-divided US.&nbsp;

Ford had testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, saying she was 100 per cent certain Kavanaugh had been her attacker.&nbsp;

Kavanaugh, in a fiery rebuttal, had said he was 100 per cent certain he had not attacked Blasey Ford.&nbsp;
