Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka lost in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday against Russia's Daniil Medvedev.

Wawrinka already plagued with a knee injury went down fighting in four sets 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 against his resurgent Russian opponent.

21-year-old Medvedev took just over two hours to outlast Wawrinka who had reached the French Open final just two weeks ago where he lost to Nadal.

After the match, a disappointed Wawrinka said, "I have no words to describe this. I guess this memory will be with me forever."

"I wasn't feeling the way I wanted to feel," he said.

"But I played against a great player who I think was confident today, was playing well, was playing faster. It was a tough loss."

Medvedev fired 10 aces during the two-hour battle to put the game beyond Wawrinka.

"It was just something special. I don't know how to explain it," Medvedev said after beating the third seed Wawrinka.

Medvedev will meet 124th-ranked Belgian Ruben Bemelmans in the next round.
