Premier League: One new coronavirus case from 1213 tests

The Premier League has confirmed that there was one positive COVID-19 test from the latest round of testing, six days ahead of English top-flight football’s return after as many as 1213 players and staff from 20 clubs were tested on Monday and Tuesday. This was the seventh round of Premier League’s testing programme with only one positive outcome from the latest tests.

There were six positive cases from round one, two from two clubs in the next round, four from two clubs in the following round and none in fourth and fifth rounds. Hence, from the twice-weekly tests, a total of 14 positive cases have been confirmed out of 7,487 tests across the division.

“The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 8 June and Tuesday 9 June, 1,213 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19,” the Premier League said in a statement on Wednesday,” the league said in a statement.

“Of these, one has tested positive. The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”

The next set of results are likely to come on Saturday with the most-watched football league moving closer to the return.

Manchester City will take on Arsenal whereas Sheffield United and Aston Villa will lock horns when Premier League restarts on June 17.

The matches will be played behind closed doors, with all safety precautions as per Premier League ‘Project Restart’ protocols.
