NFL: Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis found dead in Florida; police confirm no foul play

Former National Football League (NFL) star and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis was found dead at his grandmother’s Florida residence on Monday (April 1) evening. Davis, who excelled with the franchises like Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills was 35 at the time of his death. The Florida police also later confirmed that there was no foul play involvedand died naturally.

"Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis. A great guy, team-mate, player. My prayers to Vontae's family,” Colts owner Jim Irsay posted on X.

In a career spanning 10 years, Davis finished with 397 tackles, 97 passes and 22 interceptions and was known for his physical strength. He was a well-admired figure in the NFL roster and played in back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2014 and 2015. He famously retired mid-match while playing for the Bills against the Los Angeles Chargers in 2018.

The Dolphins, who drafted Davis as a first-round pick in 2009, said: "We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family & loved ones during this difficult time."

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis. We are thinking of his friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the Bills added in a statement.

Davis started his football career at Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. and was ranked the No. 33 cornerback recruit in the nation. Davis was selected as the 25th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and was the first-round pick in 2009 for the Miami Dolphins.

In played with the Dolphins for three seasons before being traded to Indianapolis before the start of the 2012-13 season. He would stay six seasons with the Indianapolis before shocking announcing his retirement mid-match at just 29 when he had just switched to the Buffalo Bills. The surprising move had the world of the NFL shocked for having chosen to hang his boots. The 2014 and 2015 seasons remain the best years of his career having won the Pro Bowl both years.
