In a key development for India's sports education landscape, the country is set to inaugurate its first Olympic Studies and Research Centre (OSRCs) in Gujarat. Named the Bharat Centre for Olympic Research and Education (B-CORE), this pioneering facility will be hosted by the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) in Gujarat. With an expected opening tentatively scheduled for July 2024, B-CORE is poised to become the premier hub for Olympic research and education not only in India but also in South Asia.
Endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), B-CORE will serve as a platform for scholars, professionals, athletes, and coaches, striving to deepen their understanding of Olympism and its impact on society. Founded in 2009 by the Government of Gujarat and later taken over by the Government of India in 2020, Rashtriya Raksha University's focus has been in the field of national and internal security studies. With the introduction of B-CORE, the university expands its field to sports as well.
Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, Vice-Chancellor of RRU announcing the development said, "We are proud to host the Olympics study centre. This is the 71st such Centre globally and the first in India. Remember India plans to host mega sporting events and having such a centre supplements the efforts of the organiser"
At its core, B-CORE aims to provide a comprehensive platform for disseminating research-based knowledge through a myriad of resources and educational programs. From sports management to Olympic studies and beyond, the centre will offer tailored courses and materials to support academic pursuits and professional development. The establishment of B-CORE aligns with India's aspirations to potentially host future editions of the Olympic Games. India is keen to host the Olympics in 2036 and plans to bid for it.
