French PM's announcement end Ligue 1 season
French professional sports leagues including football and rugby won’t be able to resume action before September due to COVID-19 restrictions, France Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Tuesday.
Philippe took the call as a part of a gradual plan to lift the lockdown restrictions in France as he said no event, where a crowd of more than 5,000 people gather, would be allowed until at least September.
The announcement by French PM effectively means the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 season, which was halted by COVID-19 outbreak now stand cancelled.

Earlier, UEFA had set a deadline of August 2 for domestic leagues to be completed and French Professional Football League (LFP) had announced plans for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to resume on June 17.
While the league and some clubs may want to resume training after May 11, the French government doesn’t see it as an absolute priority and have decided to put a ban on professional sporting leagues including football and rugby until September.

Before the season was halted due to the outbreak of COVID-19, PSG, Marseille and Rennes occupied the UEFA Champions League whereas Lille are taking the Europa League spot. Nimes, Amiens and Toulouse are in the relegation zone. Whereas in Ligue 2, Lorient and Lens are in promotion spots.

Even the president of French scientific council on coronavirus, Jean-Paul Delgraissy, was absolutely against the resumption of live football amid the pandemic.
'The answer for the moment is no, since all the places where there can be a significant public will not be open from May 11,' he said.
'We give ourselves a few weeks. We are watching what is happening.'
