Former Spanish footballer Fernando Hierro on Wednesday was announced as the new coach of Spain football team, hours after association sacked Julen Lopetegui.
Former Real Madrid and Bolton star Hierro will be in the dugout on Friday when Spain open their Group B campaign against Portugal in FIFA 2018 World Cup.
The 50-year-old is Spain's sporting director and his only managerial experience is a year in charge of Oviedo.
Hierro spent 14 years at Real Madrid before a year in Saudi Arabia and 12 months at Bolton.
He won 89 caps for his country.
Lopetegui’s contract was terminated as a matter of principle after the coach negotiated with Real Madrid behind Spain association's back.
The sacking came in response to the news that Lopetegui had agreed to take over at Real Madrid when the World Cup ends.
