President Trump while unveiling the Afghanistan strategy in August had said Pakistan needed to do more to destroy terrorists haven's inside the country

As Hafiz Saeed walked free on Wednesday, a top US general John Nicholson said he hadn't seen any "changes implemented" by Pakistan despite Trump administration's tough line on terror.

"We have been very direct and very clear with the Pakistanis... we have not seen those changes implemented yet," commanded of US forces in Afghanistan said.

President Trump while unveiling the Afghanistan strategy in August had said Pakistan needed to do more to destroy terrorists haven's inside the country, declaring it harboured “agents of chaos”.

With US set to send3,000 additional troops as part of the new Afghanistan strategy, the US general summed the situation saying: "we are on our way to a win."

The US administration has been especially tough on Pakistan clamping down on the Haqqani Network, but results have been difficult to come about on the ground.

"We are hoping to see those changes, we are hoping to work together with the Pakistanis going forward to eliminate terrorists who are crossing" the border, Nicholson said.

General Nicholson said he believed that senior Taliban leaders were based in Pakistan, while the lower-level leadership was based in Afghanistan.

The US general added that he had seen evidence of relations between Iran and the Taliban in western Afghanistan and was closely tracking it.

The US has tried to give logistic and technical support to the Afghan army, including supplying around 58 armed UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters as part of the $1 billion deal to provide 159 helicopters to the Afghan forces until 2024.

The Taliban though has continued its terror campaign in Afghanistan targeting Kabul with suicide attacks and bombing almost every week as the Afghan forces have struggled to maintain peace on the ground.
