India's cricket captain Virat Kohli received the Padma Shri award from President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Thursday.

Besides Kohli, Indian hockey captain PR Sreejesh, Olympic bronze medal-winning Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, ParalympianMariyappan Thangavelu and Deepa Malik, discus thrower Vikas Gowda and blind cricket team captainShekhar Naik were the seven other sportspersons who were conferred with the fourth-highest civilian order in India.

The Indian government had announced 81 other Padma awardees on the eve of the country's Republic Day on January 26.

Although India's cricket team captain Virat Kohli had suffered a blip in the recently-concluded Australia series at home, heamassed over 1,200 Test runs in this home season.

Kohli also became the fifth batsmen in history to have scored three double tons in a single season.

BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi and former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) professor Udipi Ramachandra Rao were two of seven people who were conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award, by the Indian president at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Thai princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and father of laparoscopic surgery in India Tehemton Erach Udwadia were conferred Padma Bhushan awards.
