Pakistan May 9 faultlines highlights | Former PM Imran Khan granted bail by Anti-Terrorism Court

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan appeared at an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore city on Tuesday in connection with cases related to the violent demonstrations that erupted across the South Asian nation following his arrest by military-affiliated Punjab Rangers on May 9.

Pakistan's interior minister Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday said that Imran Khan will be tried in a military court for the events of May 9 when violence erupted following his arrest and military installations became the target of violent demonstrators. 

The comment was reportedly made on a Dawn News show.

Authorities in Punjab province denied alleged 'mistreatment' of women prisoners arrested following the crackdown that began after May 9 anti-military demonstrations by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters.

"A lady gynecologist, lady psychologist, and lady doctors are present in jail," Punjab Inspector General Usman Anwar said while addressing reporters.

"The state is responsible, the country knows what to do. We are going to protect our institutions and installations but we are not going to let go of human rights," he added.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that former prime minister and chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif "will surely come to Pakistan", Dawn reported.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan got bail in three cases of arson allegedly committed on May 9 after his arrest.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan appeared before an Anti Terrorism Court in Lahore. 

He was asked to submit bail bonds in three cases of arson.

The court granted interim bail to Imran Khan till June 2 in the cases of the May 9 incidents.
