Pakistan: Father ties 15-day-old daughter in sack, buries her alive. This is what he told the police

In Pakistan's Sindh area, a father has been arrested for burying his 15-day-old infant daughter alive, reported ARY News on Sunday (July 7). The harrowing incident happened in Tharushah, Naushahro Feroze area of Sindh area.

What could push a father to such depravity?

Reportedly, the father, identified only by the name Tayyab, has confessed to the police that he had buried his daughter alive as he didn't have any money for her medical treatment. However, it is not known what disease she was suffering from.

Tayyab told police officials that he tied the infant girl in a sack before burying her. A case has been registered against the accused father.

As per the report, the police revealed that a court has instructed them to exhume the makeshift grave of the few days-old babyand has ordered that a postmortem be conducted on her remains.

Poverty in Sindh

Sindh, the second largest of all the provinces in Sindh as per the World Bank, has a higher-than-average percentage of people living below the poverty line.

As per World Bank data from 2022, the province has a population of 50.4 million people (23 per cent of Pakistan's total population). Out of this, almost half live in rural areas and 37 per cent of the rural population lives below the poverty line — higher than Pakistan's average.

In some areas, like the Badin district, poverty rates reach as high as 53.4 per cent.

"Key gender disparities in Sindh relate to access and utilisation of Maternal, Newborn and Child Healthcare (MNCH) services; early childhood development and education opportunities for the extremely poor and women-headed households," among other things it adds.

Gender Gap in Pakistan

As per the World Economic Forum (WEF)'s latest Global Gender Gap Index — for the year 2024 — Pakistan has hit the bottom in terms of gender parity, second only to Sudan. As per the 2024 Global Gender Gap Index released last month, Pakistan ranks 145 on a list of 146 nations.

The nation has fallen from last year's 142nd rank to 145th this year, indicating a worsening situation for women.
