Pakistan Elections: Candidate Mohsin Dawar injured in shooting incident in North Waziristan

Mohsin Dawar, former chairman of the Pakistan National Assembly’s standing committee on Foreign Affairs and candidate from NA-40 constituency was wounded in a firing in North Waziristan's Miran Shah on Saturday (Feb 10) as the country awaits the result of elections held on Thursday (Feb 8).

The incident took place when Dawar's supporters were staging a demonstration against the delay inthe results of the elections.

As per Geo News channel, the police began firing and shelled tear gas during the demonstration.

Dawar was contesting from the NA-40 constituency in North Waziristan for a seat in the National Assembly and lost against a PTI-backed independent candidate Aurangzeb Khan, who won the seat with 20,443 votes.

Imran Khan's party rejects Sharif's claim to power

Meanwhile, Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Saturday (Feb 10) claimed that the party is assured that it has 'won' over 170 seats in the 252-seat National Assembly of Pakistan.

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's party was stripped of its popular cricket bat symbol and the politicians backed by it contested elections as independent candidates.

According to the latest seat figures available at the time of filing this report, the independent candidates (most of them backed by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) have won about 100 seats, followed by Nawaz Sharif's PML (N) with 54 seats and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's PPP's 17 seats.

On Friday evening, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of PML (N) first laid claim to power and said efforts have already begun for an alliance with PPP and others.

On Saturday, Pakistani media reported that the PPP and the PML (N) have agreed to form an alliance.
