Myanmar's Supreme Court to hear jailed Reuters reporters' appeal

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo

Myanmar's Supreme Court on Tuesday was scheduled to hear the appeal of two Reuters journalists Wa Lone, 32 and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28.

The two reporters were arrested in December 2017, while investigating a massacre of Rohingya Muslim civilians involving Myanmar soldiers.

Last year in September, a judge found them guilty under the Official Secrets Act and sentenced them to seven years in prison.

They were convicted for breaking a colonial-era official secrets law, in a case that has raised questions about Myanmar's progress towards democracy.

Myanmar's high court in Yangon rejected an earlier appeal in January.

Their convictions were heavily criticised by press freedom advocates and Western diplomats, putting additional pressure on Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
