Maldives Parliamentary committee decides to extend emergency for 1 month

After President Yameen requested the Maldives Parliament to extend the emergency, the parliamentary committee on national security passed the resolution to extend the ongoing state of emergency for a duration 30 more days.

The Maldives government had declared a state of emergency on February 5 for 15 days which was due to expire on Tuesday.

The Parliamentcommittee convened for the crucial debate on Monday as the National Security Committee reviewed the resolution behind closed doors, Maldives media reported.

The Opposition, however, stayed away from the debate, however, in a controversial move the national security committee reportedly amended the constitution to pass the verdict as 43 members were needed to pass the resolution but only 39 were present.

Even as the turmoil in the island nation continued, Maldives ex-president Mohamed Nasheed met India's Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today. Nasheed had earlier asked for military help to resolve the crisis which was frowned upon by China.
