The Maldives army has been placed on high alert after President Abdulla Yameen refused Supreme Court order to reinstate Opposition leaders including former president Mohamed Nasheed.
The government of the Maldives is seeking to block attempt by the Supreme Court to impeach President Abdulla Yameen for disobeying its order last week to release jailed opposition leaders sparking a constitutional crisis.
The Maldives Supreme Court last week had ordered the release of ex-president Mohamed Nasheed and eight other opposition leaders on the grounds that it violated the country's constitution.
The top court said the leaders should be tried again. The opposition leader were jailed on charges ofterrorismand corruption.
The court also ordered the reinstatement of 12 lawmakers who had been stripped of their parliamentary seats which would mean Yameen's party would slip into a minority in the 85-member house.
