India's view on extension of emergency clear distortion of facts: Maldives government

India had earlier raised concern over developments in the Maldives even as the Yameen-led government imposed emergency
India's relations with the Maldives continued to slide asthe Maldives government in a statement said today that India has ignored facts and ground realities with regard to political developments in the country.
"The assertion by India that the extension of the state of emergency was unconstitutional is a clear distortion of facts," the statement by Maldives government said.
India on Wednesday had said it was deeply "dismayed" with the Maldives government after it extended the emergency for 30 days. The government added that the manner "in which the extension of the State of Emergency was approved by the Majlis in contravention of the Constitution of Maldives is also a matter of concern".
The Maldives government justified the move asserting that the Supreme Court had cleared the "validity of the emergency" in its ruling on February 21st.
"It is therefore important that friends and partners in the international community, including India, refrain from any actions that could hinder resolving the situation facing the country," the statement declared.
"The People’s Majlis provided relief by lifting some of the restrictions imposed on Constitutional Articles under the State of Emergency and by imposing the State of Emergency only upon individuals alleged to have carried out illegal activities and in the places they stayed," the Maldives government statement said.
“The government of Maldives reiterates its firm commitment to work closely with the international community, including India, to address the concerns they might have," the statement concluded.
India had earlier raised concern over developments in the Maldives even as the Yameen-led government imposed emergency on February 5th and then extended it by a further 30 days on Wednesday.
