Despite losing UNSC seat, Maldives govt thanks India for support

A day after Maldives failed to secure a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, losing toIndonesia, the government of Maldives thanked the Indian government for supporting its candidature in the UNSC.
Ambassador of Maldives to India, Ahmed Mohamed, appreciated India's support for Maldives' UNSC candidature.

Maldives had contested against Indonesia for a seat in the UNSC where it lost in the plenary session held at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday. Indonesia won the seat after securing 144 votes against 46 for the Maldives.
The Ministry of External Affairs has, however, not clarified on whether India voted for Maldives or Indonesia. Quoting the MEA a media reported that the ministry never reveals such vote to the public.
The UNSC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations majorly responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
