At least three dead, 20 wounded after series of blast in Afghanistan

At least three people are dead and 20 were wounded in a series of blasts in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Monday, an official said.

Nangarhar provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani said three blasts rocked the city centre.

"The nature of explosions is not clear, but it could be IEDs," Khogyani said, using the acronym for improvised explosive devices.

"So far we can confirm three people have been killed and 20 wounded," Khogyani added.

The blasts took place near an armoured police vehicle.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar province, which is on the border with Pakistan.

It has become the main stronghold in Afghanistan of Islamic State, which has grown into one of Afghanistan’s most dangerous militant groups since it appeared around the beginning of 2015.

Fighting between the Taliban and Islamic State fighters, and between the Taliban and Afghan forces has intensified in recent weeks amid peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan.
