Asia Bibi has left for Canada, confirms her lawyer

A Pakistani Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who had spent eight years on death row in a Pakistan prison over blasphemy charges has left the country, her lawyer, Saif Ul Malook
confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday.

"I have inquired within available channels, and according to them she has left for Canada," Bibi's lawyer, Saif Ul Malook told Reuters.

Asia Bibi was in protective custody in Pakistan after her acquittal last October by the country's Supreme Court. She was on death row since 2010. Bibi was charged for Blasphemy over the incident that took place in 2009. Her daughters are believed to have already fled to Canada, reports said.

Asia's acquittal in January had sparked protestsacross the country by hardline group Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) who threatened to kill her, ultimately, the government stepped in to contain the agitation.

The Pakistan foreign ministry hasn't reacted to Bibi's departure, neither has the Pakistan government issued any statement so far. Pakistan's local media has widely reported Asia's flight from the country.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said earlier that his country was in talks with Pakistan about helping Bibi.
