Amid violence, Afghans register to vote in long-delayed legislative elections

War-torn Afghanistan began registering voters this weekend. The country is expected to hold long-delayed legislative elections in October this year.
As many as 14 million adults at more than 7,000 polling centres will be registered in the next two months. Election Commission officials note insecurity, particularly in rural areas, as one of the major challenges in the face of the upcoming legislative election.
An Election Commission official here noted that adequate measures are being taken to increase the confidence in the public that is terrorised by militant groups like the Taliban and the Islamic State.
The polls will see candidates contesting 249 seats in the National Assembly for five-year terms. Regional elections will also be conducted in districts across the country.
Afghanistan's legislative polls were supposed to be held in 2015 after the presidential elections that took place in 2014. The elections were repeatedly stalled due to security fears among others issues that fraught the fragile government of the country.
