Kabul suicide bombing

Story highlights

Afghan media has reported three killed in the incident with at as many as nine injured in the blast.

At least seven people were reportedly killed and 25 others sustained injuries after a suicide bomber blew himself up in Afghanistan's capital city Kabul on Sunday.

The explosion took place near a convoy of gunmen commemorating the anniversary of a rebel leader's death.

The motorbike-borne suicide bomber targeted a group of vehicles in the centre of the Afghan capital, police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told AFP.

Government spokesman Wahid Majroh said that seven bodies and 25 injured people were taken to the hospital from the attack site.

Afghan security forces had earlier fatally shot a man they claimed had been planning to blow himself up near supporters of Ahmad Shah Massoud.

The Tajik commander led resistance to the Soviet occupation in the 1980s and to the 1996-2001 Taliban regime.

The attack came as convoys of gun-wielding men terrorised Kabul as they commemorated the 17th anniversary of Massoud's death.

With parliamentary elections approaching next month and rivalry between Afghanistan's ethnic groups on the increase, the annual commemoration day for Massoud has created a tense atmosphere in Kabul, where major roads were blocked by police.
