SpaceX eyes launch of next Starship flight in May this year

Starship, in its third test launch, burned up during its return trip to Earth earlier last week. After a hiatus of seven months following its inaugural flight last April, SpaceX swiftly followed up with two more test flights in November and earlier this month.

Now, the team is gearing up for the fourth launch of its powerful Starship rocket. As per reports, it is slated for launchas early as May this year.

Departing from Boca Chica, Texas, and traversing the Gulf of Mexico, the vessel's third flight completed a circumnavigation of our planet Earth.

Unfortunately, communication was lost during the final phase of the test as it descended into the atmosphere. The fate of the craft remains uncertain. However, there is speculation that it either disintegrated or burned up upon re-entry.

Now, SpaceX has set its sights on a May launch for its next Starship mission.

The company, led by entrepreneur and business magnate Elon Musk has been pushing the boundaries of space travel with its Starship project. Musk is aiming to revolutionise missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

However, it is noteworthy that while SpaceX engineers ponder over the data from the latest flight, they will also have to await clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) before proceeding with the upcoming mission.

President and COO of SpaceX Gwynne Shotwell, speaking at the Satellite 2024 conference in Washington, revealed that the team is eyeing a launch in about six weeks.

In conversation with one of the media outlets, Shotwell also expressed confidence in the recent achievements and noted that the third test flight was "incredibly successful". "We hit exactly where we wanted to go," COO said in regards to the recent test flight.

Once the Starship project fully clears all the tests and gets full certification, it will be an important transporter for cargo and crew missions to the Moon, with potential applications for manned missions to Mars.

However, the earlier flights did encounter challenges during the latter stages of the mission, including the explosion of the Super Heavy booster and subsequent disintegration of the Starship over the Indian Ocean.

SpaceX has also announced plans for lunar missions with its Starship vehicle, including the "Dear Moon" project, which intends to send artists and other private individuals on a lunar flyby mission.
