
India is gearing up for its next big leap in lunar exploration with the Chandrayaan-4 mission, set to land on the Moon's surface. Nilesh Desai, Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC), disclosed a pivotal detail about the mission during a recent presentation on the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) future lunar exploration plans. According to him, the Chandrayaan-4's landing site will be close to the Shiv Shakti Point.
Desai highlighted the scientific significance of the Shiv Shakti Point, known for its proximity to the Moon's south pole and potential water ice deposits in permanently shadowed regions.
The mission, slated for an operational life of one lunar day (approximately 14 Earth days), faces daunting challenges posed by the lunar surface's harsh conditions. These include extreme temperature fluctuations and extended periods of darkness during the lunar night.
Chandrayaan-4 will mark a milestone for ISRO, featuring a multi-launch, multi-module approach. The heavy-lift LVM-3 and the reliable PSLV rockets will carry various payloads essential for the mission's success.
The primary objective of Chandrayaan-4 is to collect lunar samples and bring them back to our planet for scientific analysis, a feat achieved only by the United States, Russia, and China so far.
The mission comprises five spacecraft modules, each serving a specific purpose in the sample retrieval process.
However, the ambitious endeavour comes with its share of challenges, notably the rugged terrain and steep slopes near the landing site. ISRO engineers are tasked with developing precise landing techniques and advanced navigation systems to ensure a safe touchdown.
