Do not oppose petitioner's prayer in Sabarimala temple: Kerala government to Supreme Court

A day after the Supreme Court established women's right for entry in Sabarimala temple in Kerala, the state government on Thursday submitted its reply to the apex court saying that they do not oppose the prayers of thepetitioner.

In its reply to the apex court senior Supreme Court lawyer and counsel appearing for the Kerala government, Jaideep Gupta said, " we are not opposing the petitioner's prayer".

The Supreme Court in its hearing on Wednesday said, "Every woman is also the creation of God and why should there be discrimination against them in employment or worship".

The famous Sabarimala temple has atraditional ban on the entry of women between 10 and 50 years of age.

The case was heard by afive-judge constitutional benchheaded by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

Last year, in October the bench had referred to an important issue askingwhether the traditional ban amounts to discrimination against women and violates their fundamental rights under the constitution.

The court hearing in the matter willbe continued on July 24.
